PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Oklahoma women's golf finished the opening round of the season in eighth place at the Carmel Cup on Friday afternoon.
The Sooners (8, +18) feature two golfers in the top 20 at Pebble Beach Golf Links with two days of competition remaining, as
Reagan Chaney and
Savannah Barber set the tone early for the Crimson and Cream.
Oklahoma held sole possession of third place at even par heading to the turn, but a challenging stretch on holes 11–13, where the Sooners posted a 10-over mark, dropped them down the leaderboard.
Chaney (T16, +1) shot 1-over 73, carding three birdies offset by four bogeys. Her birdie on the par-5 18th hole helped secure a tie for 16th heading to the weekend.
Barber (T19, +2) signed for a 74 after an impressive start that briefly had her tied for second. Birdies on the third and fourth holes helped the senior climb to a share of 19th after the first 18 holes.
Audrey Rischer (T29, +4),
Isabelle Schlick (T35, +5),
Gracie Mayo (T42, +6) and
MaKayla Tyrrell (T44, +7) sit outside the top 25 but have 36 holes remaining to make their moves.
OU begins Saturday's second round seven shots behind the top five, a target the Sooners will pursue as they look to extend their streak of top-five finishes in eight of the last nine regular-season events under head coach
Veronique Drouin-Luttrell.
No. 7 Texas A&M (1, -7) is the only team in red figures after firing a 353 (-7) in the six-count-five format, leading by 13 shots. Aggies golfers Cayetana Fernandez and Brynn Kort share first place at 3-under par.
The Sooners will tee off at 8:30 a.m. CT on Saturday, with live scoring available on Clippd.
