Two Sooners Share Second at Carmel Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Jase Summy and Ryder Cowan are tied for second individually as No. 5/8 Oklahoma shares fourth place after the opening round of the Carmel Cup at Spyglass Hill Golf Club.
The Sooners (T4, +3) were led by matching 3-under 69s from preseason All-Americans Summy and Cowan.
The Carmel Cup uses a non-traditional six-count-five format, as Oklahoma played six golfers and recorded its five lowest scores – all five of which came from players who appeared at last year's NCAA Championships.
Cowan (T2, -3) opened with back-to-back birdies and finished with six total, three on each side of the course, to join Summy near the top of the leaderboard. Summy, ranked fifth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, carded a bogey-free 33 on the front nine before playing the back nine at even par with three birdies and three bogeys.
The pair trails only Texas Tech's Connor Graham, who posted a 67 to lead after 18 holes.
PJ Maybank III (T29, +2) surged early with birdies on Nos. 1 and 4 and briefly held the lead, but finished with a 2-over 74. Matthew Troutman (T33, +3), Clark Van Gaalen (T36, +4) and Cameron Cheek (T47, +8) rounded out the Oklahoma lineup.
Vanderbilt set the pace in the team race at 8-under and leads by six shots. TCU sits second at 2-under, followed by Oklahoma State at 1-over. Oklahoma is tied with Mississippi State at 3-over.
