Carmichael Powers OU to Series Win Over Ole Miss

May 03, 2025 | Baseball

NORMAN — No. 21 Oklahoma took the series over No. 23 Ole Miss with a 5-3 win Saturday.

OU starting left-handed pitcher Cade Crossland turned in a quality start, tying his season high with eight strikeouts. The lefty hurled six innings of two-run ball, scattering five hits with just one walk.

The offense was powered by a two-home run day from junior Easton Carmichael, his second multi-homer game of the season. The Sooner catcher batted in three of OU's five runs in a 4-for-5 showing.

The series victory was OU's fifth in eight SEC series on the year and second ranked series win.

OU (32-13, 13-10 SEC) struck early, plating three runs on four hits in the first inning. After junior Trey Gambill laced his first triple of the season to the alley in right field, Carmichael launched his first home run of the game down the left line. The next two Sooners registered base hits in sophomore Jaxon Willits and freshman Kyle Branch before a fielder's choice off the bat of junior Mason Hamlin brought home OU's third run of the frame.

Ole Miss (32-15, 12-11) got one back at the top of the second via solo home run from catcher Austin Fawley.

A pair of scoreless innings ensued until the Sooners pushed the lead to 5-1 in the fifth. Carmichael led off the home half of the inning with his second home run of the game on a deep shot off the scoreboard in left field. The Sooners then loaded the bags and got one across on a bases-loaded walk drawn by junior Dawson Willis.

The Rebels clawed back in the seventh after Crossland exited following a leadoff walk. A double down the left line followed by a two-run single from Isaac Humphrey brought Ole Miss within a pair, but reliever Jason Bodin and the OU defense turned a double play to limit the damage.

Bodin retired the side in order in the eighth before Crooks entered in the ninth and stranded a pair with a strikeout. It was the closer's second save in as many days vs. the Rebels and his 12th on the season. The 12 saves for Crooks are the most in a season since Ryan Duke had 12 in 2010 and is tied for the fourth most in a single season in program history.

Carmichael paced OU at the plate with his two-homer game and Gambill chipped in a 2-for-5 performance.

Bodin fanned a pair in his 1.2 innings of relief work prior to Crooks one strikeout in the ninth to end the game.

The Sooners go for the series sweep at 2 p.m. CT Sunday. The game can be seen via SECN+ and heard on 99.3 FM/1400 AM The REF in Oklahoma or nationwide on The Varsity Network app.
