CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Oklahoma dropped the winners bracket matchup to regional host and No. 5 national seed North Carolina Saturday by a final of 11-5.
The Sooners will meet Nebraska at 11 a.m. CT Sunday in an elimination game. With a win, OU would rematch with North Carolina Sunday evening at 5 p.m. CT.
The Tar Heels (44-12) raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning on six unearned runs and held on as the Sooners offense got going late with five runs in the final four innings.
After the first two UNC batters reached via error and fielder's choice in the first inning, four straight singles and a three-run home run gave UNC a big lead early in the contest.
OU starting right-handed pitcher Kyson Witherspoon worked a pair of scoreless frames in the second and third.
UNC pushed a single run across in the fourth on a two-out single before a pair of runs via two solo shots in the fifth to chase the Sooner starter.
The Sooners (36-21) plated two in the sixth for their first runs of the contest. After a pair of singles from junior Easton Carmichael and sophomore Jaxon Willits, an RBI double from redshirt sophomore Sam Christiansen scored one. Freshman Kyle Branch followed Christiansen with an RBI groundout to score Willits.
The Tar Heels got one of the runs back in the home half of the sixth, scoring on a two-out single to make it 10-2 after six.
The teams traded solo runs in the seventh. OU scored on a two-out RBI single from Trey Gambill after a leadoff single from freshman Drew Dickerson. UNC answered with its own run-scoring single.
The Sooners made it four straight innings with a run, pushing across solo runs in the eighth and ninth. Sophomore Dasan Harris recorded his third hit of the game on an RBI single in the eighth before Willits plated one in the ninth on a base hit up the middle. OU stranded a pair at the top of the ninth.
OU utilized five arms in the game. Witherspoon (L, 10-4) went four innings, surrendering three earned runs on a career-high 10 hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Gavyn Jones (2.0 IP), Beau Sampson (0.0), Michael Catalano (1.0) and Cameron Johnson (1.0) all combined to finish the contest for OU. Jones struck out a pair while Johnson struck out the side in the eighth in his first appearance since April 13.
At the plate, Harris tied his career best with three hits in the contest to lead OU while Carmichael and Gambill also had multi-hit days.
The regional two-seed Sooners meet the three-seed Huskers for the second time in three days in an elimination game Sunday at 11 a.m. CT. With a win, OU would turn around to play UNC at 5 p.m. CT. With two OU wins on Sunday, the Sooners would play a winner-take-all regional final on Monday evening.
