Men's Golf Wins Amherst Regional to Advance to 14th Straight NCAA Championships

May 14, 2025 | Men's Golf

AMHERST, Va. – It took all 54 holes, but when the dust settled at the NCAA Amherst Regional, No. 7 Oklahoma stood alone atop the leaderboard. The Sooners surged in the final round to claim their eighth all-time NCAA Regional title and secure a program record 14th consecutive NCAA Championships appearance on Wednesday.

Oklahoma (1, -10) stormed through the final nine holes at Poplar Grove Golf Club at 12-under par, leapfrogging Vanderbilt and Tennessee to claim its fifth regional crown under head coach Ryan Hybl (2015, 2018, 2022, 2024, 2025). The Sooners are one of five teams advancing from Amherst to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 23–28 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

"Our guys did a great job all week battling the weather and obstacles," Hybl said. "We talked about how we knew we'd be starting and stopping out here, but it's one thing to talk about it and another to actually handle it. The guys were great yesterday, and then for them to do what they did today on the back nine is incredible. But none of this is unexpected for us. We know what we've got and what we're capable of – everyone saw that today."

Oklahoma's eight regional titles are tied for the fourth most in NCAA history, and the team's five wins this season are tied for the most in the country.

OU entered the final round in third place, five shots behind Tennessee. The round began Tuesday but was suspended due to weather with the Sooners tied for second and three back. After the Wednesday restart, Oklahoma caught fire – going 7-under on holes 10–12 among its counting scores. The pivotal 15th and 16th holes, where OU was 10-over in round two, yielded just one bogey on Wednesday. The Sooners played the final nine holes 12-under, with late, clutch birdies from Clark Van Gaalen, Jase Summy and Drew Goodman sealing the comeback.

True freshman Clark Van Gaalen led the way, finishing runner-up for the second time this season. The Turlock, Calif., native carded a 4-under 66 in the final round.

"Clark was amazing," Hybl added. "Coming down the stretch out here with a regional title on the line, he looked like one of the best players in the country – as a freshman. He was huge for us."

Summy and Ryder Cowan shared 10th place at 2-under for the week. Summy posted a 3-under 67, going 6-under on his final nine holes, while Cowan added a key 68 (-2) in the final round.

Goodman birdied 16 and 18 to finish 1-over for the tournament, tying for 20th. The second-team All-SEC honoree posted a 68 (-2) in the final round. PJ Maybank III tied for 27th at 3-over, recording two rounds under par.

"We got really good rounds from all our guys," Hybl said. "We counted a score from all five golfers, and we know that we have the depth to compete for championships."

Advancing alongside the Sooners from the Amherst Regional are No. 18 Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Wake Forest and No. 19 Pepperdine. Top-seeded and sixth-ranked LSU finished ninth, marking the second straight year Oklahoma won a regional while the No. 1 seed failed to advance.

Vanderbilt's Jackson Van Paris earned medalist honors at 7-under, holding off Van Gaalen's late charge.

Oklahoma will make its 14th consecutive NCAA Championships appearance, the second longest active streak in the country behind Texas, who is trying to make its 18th straight championship in 2025. The Sooners' 51 all-time NCAA appearances rank eighth in Division I history.

"We're excited to get to California and play for a national championship," Hybl said. "We're familiar with that course now and feel better about what we need to do. The great thing is all 30 teams have a shot. We believe in what we've got and who we are. We know we're good enough and that we just need to execute."

The 2025 NCAA Championships will begin May 23 and feature 54 holes of stroke play before the 30-team field is cut to 15. One more round will determine the top eight teams advancing to match play. Oklahoma has won two national titles (1989, 2017) and finished runner-up in 2021.
