NORMAN — Oklahoma men's golf begins its pursuit of a third national championship this week, competing in the program's 51st NCAA Championships appearance. The tournament, held May 23–28 at Omni La Costa's North Course in Carlsbad, Calif., opens Friday with all 30 teams in action.

The Sooners are scheduled to tee off at 2:12 p.m. CT on Friday and 8:52 a.m. CT on Saturday. After 54 holes, the field will be cut from 30 teams to 15, with the top eight advancing to match play following Monday's final round of stroke play. Match play on Tuesday and Wednesday will determine the national champion.

Head coach Ryan Hybl will stick with the same lineup that delivered a regional title. Jase Summy leads the way in the top spot, followed by Ryder Cowan at No. 2. Drew Goodman slots in at No. 3, with Clark Van Gaalen and PJ Maybank III rounding out the lineup. Matthew Troutman will serve as Oklahoma's substitute for the week.

Fresh off a win at the NCAA Amherst Regional — the program's fifth regional title since 2015 — Oklahoma enters the NCAA Championships as the No. 6 seed. The Sooners are making their 14th consecutive appearance at the national tournament, the second-longest active streak in the country behind Texas (18). The 2025 championships marks the seventh straight season OU has earned a top-10 seed at the event.

Oklahoma enters the NCAA Championships with five team titles this season — tied for the second most in the country — and a 144-28-4 head-to-head record. Ranked No. 6 nationally, the Sooners have recorded wins over every team ranked ahead of them. Led by All-SEC selections Jase Summy (First Team) and Drew Goodman (Second Team), OU brings a deep, veteran lineup to California with more than 415 combined collegiate rounds of experience

HOW WE GOT HERE

It took all 54 holes, but when the dust settled at the NCAA Amherst Regional, No. 7 Oklahoma stood alone atop the leaderboard. The Sooners surged in the final round to claim their eighth all-time NCAA Regional title and secure a program record 14th consecutive NCAA Championships appearance on Wednesday.

Oklahoma (1, -10) stormed through the final nine holes at Poplar Grove Golf Club at 12-under par, leapfrogging Vanderbilt and Tennessee to claim its fifth regional crown under head coach Ryan Hybl (2015, 2018, 2022, 2024, 2025). The Sooners are one of five teams advancing from Amherst to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 23–28 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

OU entered the final round in third place, five shots behind Tennessee. The round began Tuesday but was suspended due to weather with the Sooners tied for second and three back. After the Wednesday restart, Oklahoma caught fire – going 7-under on holes 10–12 among its counting scores. The pivotal 15th and 16th holes, where OU was 10-over in round two, yielded just one bogey on Wednesday. The Sooners played the final nine holes 12-under, with late, clutch birdies from Clark Van GaalenJase Summy and Drew Goodman sealing the comeback.

True freshman Clark Van Gaalen led the way, finishing runner-up for the second time this season. The Turlock, Calif., native carded a 4-under 66 in the final round.

THE HYBL STANDARD

Ryan Hybl, Oklahoma's winningest coach, has led the Sooners to 13 straight NCAA Finals, a 2017 national title and 49 tournament wins, fourth most among active coaches. Since taking over in 2009, he's coached 14 Sooners to 30 All-America honors and won three conference titles. The 2022 Dave Williams National Coach of the Year, Hybl was inducted into the GCAA Hall of Fame in 2024.

One of the nation's most dominant golf programs over the past decade, Oklahoma has won 39 tournaments since 2015, including the 2017 national championship. Since the start of the 2021-22 season, OU leads all SEC programs with 20 stroke-play tournament victories and the team's five tournament titles this season are tied for second most in the country.

THE COURSE

For the second consecutive year, the North Course at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa will play home to the championship. The par-72, 7,538-yard course is the longest course for a championship since the 2019 title was contested at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. Located just north of San Diego in Carlsbad, Calif., the North Course was ranked as one of the top-100 golf courses in America in 2020. Redesigned by Gil Hanse specifically for the NCAA Championships, the new home of college golf through at least 2026, the North Course opened in 1965 and served as the host of the PGA TOUR's Mercedes Championships from 1969-1998 and has hosted the WCC-Accenture Match Play Championships eight times.

Hanse and his team made significant design changes to the course with the NCAA's match-play format in mind, aiming to create a layout that challenges the best players in the game. A key feature of the new design is the increased number of risk-reward decisions players must make during their rounds. Notable changes include a drivable par-4 at hole 11, a repositioned green on the par-3 16th hole inspired by Augusta National's famous 12th hole, and a formidable finishing hole: the par-5 18th, now stretching over 600 yards from the back tee with water hazards on both sides of the fairway.

FORMAT

The NCAA Championships feature 72 holes of stroke play, with the field cut from 30 to 15 teams after 54 holes. Following Monday's final round, the top eight teams advance to match play, and the individual champion is crowned. Match play on Tuesday and Wednesday will decide the team national champion.
