Men's Golf Opens NCAA Regional Action on Sunday
May 10, 2025 | Men's Golf
NORMAN — Oklahoma will look to extend a program record this week and punch its ticket to a 14th consecutive NCAA Championships by finishing in the top five at the NCAA Amherst Regional, which tees off Sunday due to expected inclement weather. The Sooners enter the 13-team, 54-hole event as the No. 2 seed and have only finished outside of the top five at one event this season.
The tournament serves as the qualifying event for the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 23–28 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. The top five teams and the lowest-scoring individual not on an advancing team will move on to the championship. Originally scheduled for Monday–Wednesday, the regional will now begin Sunday afternoon, with 18 holes planned for Monday and the final 36 holes to be completed over the following three days.
This marks the seventh straight season that Oklahoma, currently ranked No. 7 nationally, has earned a top-three seed in its regional — extending the longest streak in program history.
Top-seeded and sixth-ranked LSU headlines the Amherst field, followed by the Sooners. In total, eight of the nation's top 50 teams are in the field: No. 6 LSU, No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 18 Vanderbilt, No. 19 Pepperdine, No. 30 Tennessee, No. 31 Arizona, No. 42 Stanford and No. 43 Wake Forest. Arkansas, Florida Gulf Coast, Kent State, Princeton and Howard round out the 13-team field.
The Sooners have claimed four tournament titles in 2024–25, tied for the third-most in the country. OU owns a 132-17-3 record and has beaten every team ranked ahead of it at least once this season, including top-seeded LSU. Led by Palmer Cup selection Jase Summy and two other top-50 players in Drew Goodman and Ryder Cowan, the Sooners bring one of the nation's most experienced lineups into the postseason, with the roster combining for over 600 career rounds.
Oklahoma has won seven NCAA Regionals in program history, including four under head coach Ryan Hybl (2015, 2018, 2022, 2024).
OU will bring the same six players to Amherst that competed at the SEC Championship, but will make one change in the lineup for the five-count-four format. First Team All-SEC honoree Jase Summy will play in the top spot, followed by Ryder Cowan. Senior Drew Goodman, who graduated Saturday and was named Second Team All-SEC on Friday, will occupy the third bag. True freshman Clark Van Gaalen makes his NCAA postseason debut in the fourth spot, and PJ Maybank III slides into the fifth position. Matthew Troutman will serve as the team's substitute.
The Sooners have advanced out of their NCAA Regional in 13 straight seasons — the second-longest active streak in the nation.
