Sooners Fall in Series Opener to Tigers

April 03, 2025 | Baseball

NORMAN — No. 10 Oklahoma fell in the series opener to No. 7 LSU Thursday night in Norman by a final of 2-0.

LSU starting left-handed pitcher Kade Anderson (W, 6-0) threw the first complete-game shutout vs. the Sooners since 2015 as the Tiger ace fanned 14 batters on the night.

OU starter Kyson Witherspoon (L, 5-2) turned in a quality start, going six inning and holding the explosive Tiger lineup to two runs on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts. LSU's two runs in the contest matched a season low.

OU threatened early in the game, loading the bases in the first inning on a pair of base hits from Easton Carmichael and Sam Christiansen, followed by a walk drawn by Jaxon Willits. Anderson escaped the jam with back to back strikeouts.

After scoreless first and second innings, the Tigers (28-3, 8-2 SEC) pushed their first run across at the top of the third. After a two-out double from leadoff hitter Derek Curiel, Jared Jones brought him home on a single to right field.

The Sooners (23-6, 5-5 SEC) stranded another pair in the bottom of the third before going down in order in the fourth.

At the top of the fifth, LSU doubled their lead with an RBI double from nine-hole hitter Chris Stanfield.

In the sixth, OU put a runner in scoring position courtesy of a leadoff double to right from Christiansen. With two outs, freshman Drew Dickerson hit a ball deep down the left line, but the shot went just went foul and Anderson again got out of the jam with a strikeout.

The LSU southpaw put OU down in order across the seventh through ninth inning to cap a career day on 135 pitches. It was the first complete-game shutout thrown against the Sooners since Nate Griep of Kansas State on May 8, 2015. OU's 14 strikeouts at the plate tied a season high.

OU reliever James Hitt was exceptional out of the pen, hurling three scoreless, hitless innings with four strikeouts. Hitt put the Tigers down in order in the eighth and ninth, striking out the side in the eighth.

At the plate, Christiansen paced OU with a 2-for-3 showing with a double, OU's only extra-base hit of the contest.

The teams meet for game two of the series Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT. The matchup can be seen via SECN+ and heard in Oklahoma on 99.3 FM/1400 AM The REF or nationwide on The Varsity Network app.
