Lead, Mudler at UGA G3

No. 14 OU Drops Rubber Game at No. 10 UGA

April 26, 2025 | Baseball

ATHENS, Ga. — No. 14 Oklahoma fell in a decisive game three at No. 10 Georgia by a final of 6-3 Saturday in Athens.

Oklahoma (30-13, 11-10 SEC) jumped out to a two-run lead in the second inning on a two-run double from Georgia native Scott Mudler but the Sooners couldn't hold down the powerful Georgia offense for nine innings. The Bulldogs (35-11, 12-9 SEC) hit four home runs en route to the comeback victory to take the conference series.

Both teams went in order in the first inning before Oklahoma struck first at the top of the second. Sophomore Jason Walk was hit by pitch, followed by OU's first hit of the game on a single to right from freshman Kyle Branch, then Mudler laced a two-run double to right.

Georgia got their first hit and run of the game in the third on a solo home run from Kolby Branch.

Two scoreless innings ensued before UGA took the lead in the sixth. The Bulldogs took advantage of a Sooner error, striking for three unearned runs on a three-run home run from first baseman Brennan Hudson.

OU starting right-handed pitcher Malachi Witherspoon went six innings, surrendering one earned run on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. It was the third straight start with at least seven strikeouts for Witherspoon.

The Sooners loaded in the bases in the seventh but couldn't cash in as UGA stranded them on a flyout to left. In the home half of the seventh, a pair of solo home runs from Branch, his second of the game, and right fielder Robbie Burnett extended the lead to 6-2.

Mudler recorded his second RBI double of the day at the top of the eighth after a pair of walks drawn by Sam Christiansen and Branch. OU stranded two runners in the frame.

Oklahoma put one runner on in the ninth before a fly out ended OU's chance at a rally.

Mudler paced OU with a 2-for-4, three RBI day with two doubles. On the mound, the Sooners used three bullpen arms in James Hitt (0.1 IP), Jason Bodin (0.2) and Dylan Crooks (1.0) with Bodin and Crooks striking out one. Hitt and Bodin each surrendered one run on one hit.

OU returns home for four games at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman next week. The homestand begins Tuesday evening with a 6:30 p.m. CT contest vs. Wichita State (12-29). The game can be seen via SECN+ and heard on 99.3 FM/1400 AM The REF in Oklahoma or nationwide on The Varsity Network app.

Up next in SEC play, OU hosts Ole Miss next weekend, May 2-4.
