Sooners Narrowly Fall to Auburn in Road Challenge

March 13, 2025 | Men's Tennis

NORMAN – The No. 18 Oklahoma men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Auburn Thursday afternoon at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.

OU is now 10-5 on the season and 3-3 in SEC play.

The Sooners claimed their 13th doubles point of the season when sophomore Asahi Harazaki and freshman Alejandro Melero won 6-4 at the three spot and junior Luis Alvarez and sophomore Kholo Montsi defeated the Tigers in a tiebreak, 7-6(7) on court two. The No. 39 Sooner pair of junior Bruno Nhavene and freshman Oscar Lacides fell short to No. 13 pair Billy Blaydes and William Nolan, 3-6.

OU went ahead 2-0 when Alvarez took his fourth SEC singles win, 6-2, 6-3. Auburn pushed back with a win at the six line where Melero came up short, 5-7, 4-6.

The Sooners extended the lead again when Montsi picked up his first SEC win at the two line. The three-set battle showed Montsi's resilience, as he shut out his opponent in the third set, taking the match 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. With OU leading 3-1, freshman Orel Kimhi took only his third loss of the season, 4-6, 4-6, to allow Auburn to pull within one at 3-2.

Auburn tied the match at 3-all when senior Jordan Hasson narrowly fell at the five position, 5-7, 5-7. The last Sooner on the court was Lacides, who battled with William Nolan at the primary spot. After dropping the first set in a tiebreak, Lacides fought to force a tiebreak in the second set. He ultimately lost the match, 6-7(3), 6-7(6).
