NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team sent its senior class out with a win Sunday night, securing the 25-20,25-18, 20-25, 25-19 victory over Auburn inside McCasland Field House.
The ending of the match was a storybook moment as fifth-year senior
Kelsey Carrington entered the game for the first time with match point on the line. Carrington came up big with a kill to secure the win for the Sooners.
"Kelsey is the consummate professional in college sports," head coach
Aaron Mansfield said. "She shows up and does her best every single day regardless of playing time. We've leaned on her leadership ever since I started here. It's a testament to her character to go in the game in a position like that and get a kill to seal the deal.
All six seniors made major impacts on the match.
Kari Geissberger notched 16 kills on a .400 clip to go with a team-best seven blocks.
Lydia Martyn tallied eight kills to go with five blocks and added a service ace.
Daleigh Ellison also tallied eight kills, along with two blocks.
Payton Chamberlain notched a double-double with 50 assists and 10 digs.
Callie Kemohah recorded 18 digs and was just shy of a double-double with nine assists.
"Some of these seniors have been here for four or five years and some have been here a year," Mansfield said. "Either way, they've all made a huge impact. They've set a great standard for the freshman and sophomores to emulate going forward and we're going to miss them."
Alexis Shelton led all players with 21 kills on the night, her eight 20-plus kill performance of the year and 28th-straight match with double-digit kills. Shelton was all over the stat sheet, adding six blocks, six digs and two assists.
OU took the first set 25-20 after jumping out to a 13-9 lead. Auburn capitalized on a pair of Sooner errors to pull within two, but OU responded with a 3-0 run to extend its lead. OU took its largest lead of the set at 21-14 and closed things out on a Geissberger kill.
In the second set, the teams traded points early before the Sooners used a 4-0 run to take a 16-11 lead. OU pushed its lead to eight at 24-16 and Shelton notched the set-winning kill as the Sooners took it 25-18.
Auburn took the third set, 25-20. In the fourth and final, the Sooners used an impressive .552 hitting percentage to command the final frame. OU led 13-6 early and never let the Tigers within more than three points throughout the set. A 5-1 run, capped off by Carrington's kill, closed out the set and the match, 25-19.
OU will close out the regular season at Arkansas on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. CT in Fayetteville, Ark.
