NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams are set to conclude the regular season in College Station, Texas, Friday for the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M at the Watts Cross Country Course.
The OU men will run an 8K at 8:30 a.m. and the women will compete in the 6k at 9:15 a.m. Oklahoma will feature nine runners on the men's team and 13 athletes for the women's.
Per USTFCCCA's week three regional poll released on Oct. 7, the OU women enter the invitational No. 6 in the Midwest region, matching the program's best-ever ranking. The men's team is positioned at No. 12 in the Midwest, their highest ranking since 2017.
At the Joe Piane Invitational on Oct. 4, the women's team placed 10th in the 5K with 356 points and the men's squad finished 14th in the 8K with 328 points. The women's and men's fields were host to USTFCCCA's national coaches' poll's top-25 teams in Notre Dame, BYU, Northern Arizona and Michigan State, plus 14 more regionally ranked teams.
Freshman
Leah Jeruto made her collegiate cross country debut and finished third overall with a collegiate personal best of 16:06.7. Senior
Gabi Barrera was the Sooners' next-best finisher, taking 68th with a career-best time of 17:10.7. Graduate transfer
Megan Johnson followed in 73rd with another PR of 17:14.8. Five more Sooner women collected personal-best times.
To earn SEC Men's Freshman Runner of the Week on Oct. 8,
Thobias Cheruiyot finished 18th in the 8K at the Joe Piane Invitational, becoming the first OU cross country runner to ever grab two weekly conference honors. His personal-record time was the second fastest by a freshman in the SEC that weekend behind Alabama's Dismus Lokira, who was named SEC Men's Runner of the Week.
