ATLANTA — Oklahoma fell to regional host and No. 2 national seed Georgia Tech, 9-3, in the winners bracket game Saturday night in Atlanta.
The regional two-seed Sooners (33-22) battled a potent Georgia Tech (50-9) lineup, tying the game in the sixth inning before the Yellow Jackets scored the final six runs of the contest across the sixth and seventh.
OU starting right-handed pitcher Xander Mercurius held the Georgia Tech offense that averages nearly 11 runs per game at bay, giving up five runs on seven hits with three walks to go with a career-best eight strikeouts.
The OU offense was powered by home runs from Dayton Tockey and Jaxon Willits. Tockey's was his second of the day after hitting one in OU's morning win over The Citadel. Willits' blast was his sixth of the season, a solo blast at the top of the sixth that tied the game at three.
After a scoreless first, Tech jumped out in front in the second on a two-run home run from Parker Brosius, his first of two in the game. Oklahoma responded with a single run in the third as Jason Walk raced home from second on a failed pickoff attempt.
To the fourth, a solo home run from Tech pushed the lead back to a pair before OU again responded in the fifth via Tockey's home run.
Willits' blast at the top of the sixth tied the game at three.
The Yellow Jackets would score three in the seventh and have the bases loaded before the game went into a one-hour rain delay. Following the delay, Tech plated one more run prior to righty Mason Bixby stranded the bases loaded to limit the damage.
The Sooners would utilize five relievers in the contest with Bixby pacing the group with two strikeouts in 1.1 scoreless innings.
OU stranded one at the top of the eighth before going down in order in the ninth to end the game.
The Sooners fall into a noon CT elimination game Sunday, rematching vs. The Citadel. The game can be seen via ESPN+ and heard on The REF 99.3 FM/1400 AM or nationwide on The Varsity network app.
