AUBURN, Ala. — No. 14 Oklahoma defeated No. 11 Auburn 2-1 Saturday night to force a decisive game three Sunday afternoon.
OU starting left-handed pitcher Cameron Johnson and relievers Xander Mercurius and Kadyn Leon combined to allow a hot Auburn (29-13, 11-9 SEC) offense just one run on five hits with a combined eight strikeouts. Sooner second baseman Kyle Branch was spectacular in the field, making nine assists and ending the game with a diving stop with a runner on second.
The Oklahoma (29-13, 11-9) offense was provided by Branch with a sacrifice fly in the second and a Deiten Lachance RBI knock in the fifth.
Johnson (W, 6-1) hurled 5.2 shutout innings with four strikeouts and allowed just three hits. The freshman Mercurius went 2.1 innings of one-run ball, surrendering two hits while striking out three and walking none. Leon earned the save in the ninth, allowing no hits or runs with one walk and struck out one.
The teams meet for the rubber match Sunday at 2 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
