NORMAN – For the seventh time this season, tied for the second most in SEC history, Oklahoma freshman guard
Aaliyah Chavez has been named SEC Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week after leading the Sooners to a pair of ranked wins.
Chavez's seven honors are the second most by a freshman in program history, trailing only Courtney Paris, who won the award nine times during her freshman season. Her seven selections match Vanderbilt's Mikayla Blakes from last season and trail Kentucky's Rhyne Howard, who earned eight in 2018-19, in the SEC record book.
In No. 7 Oklahoma's two games last week, Chavez averaged 24.0 points, 4.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals while shooting 47% from the field. She was the only player in the SEC, regardless of class, to average that stat line during the week.
The guard opened with 27 points on 53% shooting in a road win at No. 24 Georgia, adding five assists, four rebounds and two steals in the four-point victory. Chavez went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in Athens and followed by going 10-for-10 at the stripe in Oklahoma's 100-93 win over No. 21 Tennessee. She finished with 21 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals against the Lady Vols. Her 18-of-18 shooting performance at the free throw line, pushed her to 47 consecutive makes at the charity stripe, tying an SEC record.
Chavez arrived in Norman as one of the most decorated recruits in the country. The guard was the consensus national high school player of the year and the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class, and she has quickly produced at the college level. A national freshman of the year contender, Chavez leads all true freshmen who meet the NCAA's minimum threshold in scoring, and her six 25-point games are more than every other SEC freshman combined.
She is also one of only four players nationally, and the only freshman, averaging at least 18.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds while committing fewer than 3.0 turnovers per game. If she maintains those numbers, she would join Paige Bueckers as the only freshmen since 2009 to reach those marks.
Chavez and the Sooners look for their fifth straight win Thursday when Arkansas visits Norman for a 6 p.m. CT tip on SEC Network+. Oklahoma will celebrate seniors
Raegan Beers,
Beatrice Culliton and
Payton Verhulst following the game.
