Three Sooners Earn NCAA Berths as Women's Tennis Closes ITA Central Regional

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Oklahoma women's tennis team concluded play at the ITA Central Regional Championships on Monday, highlighted by sophomore Laura Brunkel earning co-champion honors in singles and the doubles team of junior Gloriana Nahum and freshman Sara Shumate claiming the doubles title.

In the opening round of main-draw action, five of six Sooners earned singles victories, and both Oklahoma doubles teams advanced. Shumate fell to Kansas State's Marta Leon Jaume, 6-0, 6-3.

In the singles round of 32, Brunkel, Zoie Epps, Nahum and Salakthip Ounmuang won their matches, while Chloé Noël fell short. Brunkel was the only Sooner to advance to the singles semifinals and ultimately earned co-champion honors.

Brunkel put together an impressive run through the draw, winning every match without dropping a set. The sophomore defeated Alicia Dale of Iowa State, Yerkezhan Arystanbekova of Kansas and Emma Tothova of Iowa before beating Conley Raidt of Nebraska to reach the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Brunkel earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Tulsa's Alyssa Novoa. Brunkel and Oklahoma State's Arina Malygina opted not to play the championship match, with both players earning automatic qualification for the NCAA Championships in Athens, Georgia, by reaching the final.

Oklahoma also found success in doubles, with both Sooner pairs advancing to the final. Brunkel and Noël earned a ranked victory over Wichita State's No. 50-ranked duo of Giorgia Roselli and Xin Tong Wang.

In the final, the No. 39-ranked team of Nahum and Shumate defeated Brunkel and Noël, 6-0, 6-1, to claim the doubles title and secure a spot in the NCAA Doubles Championship.

The final NCAA qualifying events, the ITA Sectional Championships and the Conference Masters Championships, are scheduled for Nov. 5-8.
