Oklahoma Prepped for SEC Tennis Championship

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's tennis team is set to kick off the 2025 SEC Men's Tennis Championship in Columbia, S.C. on Wednesday, April 16.

MATCH DAY BASICS

The Sooners face LSU for the second time this season in the opening round of the tournament. First serve is set to go up at 1 p.m. CT. The match can be followed through live stream or live stats. Bracket information and additional details can be found on the tournament page

LAST TIME OUT

Oklahoma completed the regular season with two road matches against Kentucky and Vanderbilt.

The Sooners dropped the match against Kentucky, 1-4, where the lone point for OU came in the doubles portion of the match. The No. 26 duo of Bruno Nhavene and Oscar Lacides claimed their fifth ranked win over the Wildcats' No 18 pair, 6-4. Sophomore Kholo Montsi and junior Luis Alvarez picked up their 10th conference win, 7-5, to seal the doubles win.

OU picked up yet another doubles win against Vanderbilt to head into singles with an advantage. Trailing 1-2 after dropping two singles points, Montsi evened the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Freshman Orel Kimhi gave the Sooners a 3-2 lead after winning 6-4, 6-4. The Commodores won the match, 4-3, after taking wins on the final two courts.

IN THE RANKINGS

Lacides sits at the No. 91 spot in the ITA singles rankings and is joined by Alvarez at No. 97.

In doubles, Lacides and Nhavene return to the top 10 at the No. 10 spot.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Montsi's win against the Commodores marked his 10th win of the season and sixth conference victory. When facing LSU in the final home match of the season, Montsi played at the primary spot for the first time in his career and claimed a straight-set win, 7-5, 6-3. The win also marked a ranked win for the sophomore.

In doubles, Montsi and Alvarez have proven to be consistent competitors for the Sooners. The duo are 17-2 on the season and have 10 wins in SEC play, leading the team in season and conference records.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

LSU is 12-16 on the season and 1-13 in SEC play with a win over Alabama. The Sooners hosted the Tigers in the last home match of the season, picking up a 6-1 win. The match was the first time in program history that the teams have faced off.

The Tigers have one player in the ITA singles rankings with Alessio Vasquez Gehrke at the No. 75 place.

In doubles, Aleksi Lofman and Julien Penzlin are No. 39.

UP NEXT

If the Sooners advance to the next round of the tournament, they will face No. 7 seed Georgia on Thursday, April 17, at 5 p.m. CT.
