Men's Tennis to Face Ole Miss, Alabama in Road Bouts

NORMAN – The No. 21 Oklahoma men's tennis team is prepped for two conference road matches against Ole Miss on Thursday, March 27, at 3 p.m. CT and Alabama on Saturday, March 29, at 1 p.m. CT.

LAST TIME OUT

Oklahoma topped Georgia at home on Friday, March 21, to pick up the fourth conference win of the season and improve the overall record to 11-6.

The Sooners claimed their 14th doubles point of the season with wins at the one and two lines. No. 49 duo Bruno Nhavene and Oscar Lacides took down the No. 26 pair of Freddy Blaydes and Niels Ratiu, 6-3. Sophomore Kholo Montsi and junior Luis Alvarez pulled off an upset as the pair came back from a 5-3 deficit to claim the 7-5 win and clinch the doubles point. 

Georgia won the first two singles matches at the two and four lines before the Sooners tied the match when sophomore Asahi Harazaki won at the six position, 6-3, 6-4. Alvarez fought back from a deficit in the second set to send the match to a final set, where he had a dominant performance against No. 25 Thomas Paulsell. Alvarez sealed the upset, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, to extend his win streak to five matches. The win marked the junior's 11th win of the season and sixth conference win. Lacides clinched the match for the Sooners in a hard-fought third-set tiebreak, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6(3).

IN THE RANKINGS

The Sooners check in at the No. 21 spot in the most recent ITA team rankings.

In singles, Lacides sits at No. 94. The freshman has been noted in every ranking for the 2025 season.

Lacides is also ranked in doubles with teammate Nhavene in the No. 49 place.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Lacides claimed Oklahoma's first conference weekly honor as the Freshman of the Week, the SEC announced Wednesday. 

The freshman comes off a dominant performance in Friday's home match where he tallied a ranked win in singles and doubles. Lacides' victory over Georgia's No. 31 Miguel Perez Pena marked his second ranked win of the season and tenth win overall. In doubles, Lacides and Nhavene defeated the No. 26 team to assist Oklahoma in winning the 14th doubles point of the season.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

The Ole Miss Rebels are 11-8 on the season and have losses against Texas A&M and Florida in their last two matches. 

The Rebels do not have any player ranked in singles, but Kai Milburn and Isac Stromberg represent Ole Miss in doubles, sitting at the No. 78 spot.

Alabama is also 11-8 overall for the 2025 season and are 3-7 in conference play. The Tide defeated Kentucky and fell to Tennessee in their last competitions.

Alabama is represented by three players in the ITA singles rankings. Leading the group is Filip Planinsek at No. 18, followed by Roan Jones at No. 83 and Matias Ponce de Leon at No. 119. In doubles, Planinsek and Matic Kriznik sit at the No. 32 spot, Andrii Zimnokh and Zach Foster are No. 81 and Zimnokh and Damien Nezar are No. 83.
