Yockers Wins Pommel Horse Bronze as Sooners Cap Winter Cup

February 23, 2025 | Men's Gymnastics

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Seven current and future Oklahoma men's gymnasts competed in the Winter Cup finals on Sunday afternoon at the Kentucky International Convention Center.

Current Sooners Fuzzy Benas, Ignacio Yockers and Kelton Christiansen and 2025 OU signees Sasha Bogonosiuk and Nathan Roman competed in both rounds of Winter Cup competition, while signees Alex Noel and Max Morelos participated in the finals on Sunday after competing in the Elite Team Cup on Saturday.

Yockers won the bronze medal on pommel horse, combining for a total of 27.400 (14.050 on Friday and 13.350 on Sunday).

Benas placed seventh on floor exercise with a 26.900 total (13.600 on Friday and 13.300 on Sunday) and stuck his vault for a 14.200 on Sunday to record the fifth-highest vault total of 28.100 (he scored 13.900 on Friday). Christiansen placed fifth on high bar with his combined 26.400 (13.250 on Friday and 13.150 on Sunday).

"The guys kind of did what they could do," Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams said. "Fuzzy had a pretty decent result on vault, sticking it. It's good to have him back doing two events. Hopefully he'll be doing more in the next three weeks. Both Ignacio and Kelton were not feeling great, which didn't help. Just if Ignacio had put together the dismount, he had a chance to win. On Kelton's high bar he had a little mistake but still hung in there. It's always good to be among the nation's re-ranking event in the middle of the season."

OU signee Sasha Bogonosiuk finished seventh in the all-around with a two-day total of 154.900 (77.050 and 77.850). Fellow signee Nathan Roman placed 10th in the all-around with a 150.750 total (74.300 and 76.450). Bogonosiuk placed fourth on vault with an average of 26.950 (two vaults were required on both Friday and Sunday to qualify). He also placed seventh on parallel bars (25.650), ninth on floor exercise (26.700) and 12th on high bar (25.650). Roman placed eighth on high bar (26.000) and 14th on floor (25.600).

Roman was selected as one of six athletes to represent USA Gymnastics at the DTB Pokal Junior Men's Team Challenge.

Sooner signees Alex Noel and Max Morelos qualified for the junior and senior men's finals with their performances in the Elite Team Cup on Saturday. Noel scored 11.400 on pommel horse to place sixth among juniors and 12.500 on parallel bars to place fourth. Morelos finished sixth among juniors on both parallel bars (12.250) and high bar (11.050).

Including senior Brigham Frentheway, who competed on floor exercise on Friday, and signee Jackson Rendon, an Elite Team Cup participant on Saturday, a total of nine current and future Sooners competed at 2025 Winter Cup.

Oklahoma returns to NCAA competition on Friday, Feb. 28, against California and Nebraska in Berkeley, Calif. The start time for that meet is set for 8 p.m. CT.
