NEW ORLEANS – Redshirt senior
Fuzzy Benas is in second place in the all-around after the first day of competition at the 2025 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships at the Smoothie King Center. Benas posted an all-around score of 81.105 on Thursday.
Benas sits in the top 10 on four events: horizontal bar (13.655; third), floor exercise (14.050; seventh), parallel bars (13.450; eighth) and pommel horse (13.350; ninth). He scored 14.250 on vault (sixth-highest score) and 12.350 on still rings. He is second in the all-around competition behind Stanford's Asher Hong (85.585).
Freshman Sasha Bogonosiuk scored 78.500 and sits 10th in the all-around, while redshirt freshman
Alex Deubler is 13th (76.550) and freshman Nathan Roman is 20th (75.500). Senior
Kelton Christiansen is in the top 15 in both of his events, placing 11th on high bar (13.400) and 15th on pommel horse (13.000).
Benas, Bogonosiuk, Deubler, Roman and Christiansen advance to Saturday's competition, which begins at 5:30 p.m. CT on
Peacock. All-around and individual event winners and the national team selection will be based on combined scores using both the Day 1 and Day 2 competitions.
"That's not a bad first night," Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams said. "It's a new quadrennium with new routines. I'm pretty happy with the results. Fuzzy being second is a great spot for him. Obviously, Sasha did great for this being his first time in the senior competition. We'll see if we can do it again on Saturday."
Bogonosiuk scored 13.700 on floor (11th) and 13.200 on parallel bars (13th). Also on p-bars, Deubler scored 13.400 (10th) and Roman scored 13.150 (15th). In the vault standings (two vaults required), Benas is third with a 14.200 average and Bogonosiuk is fourth with a 13.875 average (and a 14.150 high, which counted toward his all-around score). Freshman
Nick Cruz scored 70.350 in the all-around, including a 13.800 on vault.
Freshmen Alex Noel and Jackson Rendon competed in the junior session Thursday afternoon, with their scores counting toward the senior competition. Noel totaled 73.450 in the all-around and Rendon scored 72.700 to placed third and fourth, respectively, in their age group during the junior session (27th and 28th overall. Noel is the second reserve athlete for Saturday's finals.
