Sooners Open SEC Play in Edmond

February 21, 2025 | Men's Tennis

NORMAN  – The No. 22 Oklahoma men's tennis team is set to host their first conference matchup as members of the SEC. The Sooners will take on the Arkansas Razorbacks on Monday, Feb. 24, at noon CT. The match has been relocated to Edmond Center Court due to construction at the Headington Family Tennis Center. Admission is free for those in attendance.

Last Time Out

The Sooners return to action after a short break in competition. OU last faced then-No. 9 San Diego on the road, dropping just the second match of the season. While the pair of sophomore Kholo Montsi and junior Luis Alvarez took a 6-2 win at the two line, the Toreros took the doubles point to claim an early lead in the match. Two Sooners took first-set wins to head into their second sets with advantages and both matches went into second-set tiebreakers, going unfinished. The singles wins for San Diego came at the one, two and six lines.

In their last home match, the Sooners topped Tulsa for the second time this season. Oklahoma swept the Golden Hurricane, 7-0, in the midweek matchup. In the doubles portion of the match, the two and three spots took wins to put OU ahead. Montsi took the first singles win in three sets, followed by junior Bruno Nhavene's match concluded with a second-set tiebreak win. Senior Jordan Hasson clinched the match at the five line, dominating the third set, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Junior Luis Alvarez and freshmen Orel Kimhi and Oscar Lacides also won their matches to complete the shutout score.

In the Rankings

Oklahoma tennis heads into conference play ranked No. 22 in the most recent ITA rankings. The Sooners started the season ranked No. 10 and jumped to their season-high ranking of No. 8 the following week after opening the season with wins over Omaha, Cornell and UT Arlington.

The Sooners are represented by two players in the singles rankings. Junior Luis Alvarez is No. 96 and freshman Oscar Lacides is No. 123. Alvarez led the Sooners in preseason rankings with a ranking of 62. He has a season record of 5-2 and primarily competes at the two singles position. Lacides began his Sooner career with a No. 10 newcomer ranking. He went on to claim the champion and co-champion titles of the ITA Central Region Championship in doubles and singles and later won the doubles draw of the Norman Open. Lacides currently holds a 7-2 record on the spring season and has taken five wins at the one singles line.

Player to Watch

Jordan Hasson heads into conference play undefeated on the season, kicking off his senior campaign with a 5-0 win streak. He has played at the three (1-0), four (2-0) and five (2-0) singles spots this season and currently holds the best record for the Sooners.

The senior from Israel also had a successful fall season where he reached the finals of the ITA Central Region Championship and claimed the co-champion title of the tournament. He tallied an 8-3 record during the fall slate.

S-E-C! S-E-C! S-E-C!

Oklahoma heads into its first season in the SEC after joining the conference on July 1, 2025. Seven conference matches will take place on Sooner home courts, including matches against Tennessee, Georgia and Texas.

The Sooners reunite with their former Big 12 opponents Texas A&M as the teams are once again in the same conference. Last time the Sooners and Aggies faced off, OU came out on top, 5-2.
