WEEKEND REWIND
The Sooners went 2-0 on the weekend with a major upset of No. 21 Missouri on Sunday afternoon. Down 2-0 in the match and on the verge of being swept, OU pulled off the reverse sweep to pick up their first win in Columbia in 15 years. This was the first win over a ranked opponent in 2025 and first since beating No. 9 Texas in November 2024. Alexis Shelton was dynamic with a .564 hitting percentage on 25 kills.

Against Vanderbilt, the Sooners dropped the first set but quickly rattled off three straight set wins to take the match 3-1. As a team, OU notched 10 service aces with Tekoa Barnes recording three and Kamille Gibson and Whitney Wallace each recording a pair. The team also notched 11.0 blocks as Kelli Jo Burgess led the way with seven, including three solo.

ALL EYES ON ALEXIS
Senior Alexis Shelton was named to the preseason watch list for the AVCA's 2025 Division I Player of the Year Award, presented by Nike Volleyball. Shelton leads the Sooners this season with 196 kills across 55 sets played. The senior is averaging 3.56 kills/set and is just shy of a .300 hitting percentage at .290. She has added five service aces, 73 digs and 41 blocks to her season stats.

After becoming the 15th Sooner to reach 1,000 kills, Shelton has climbed into the top 10 in program history and currently sits in ninth with 1,314. She is just 38 kills away from taking over the No. 7 spot from Sallie McLaurin and having the most kills by a Sooner in the 25-point rally scoring era. Shelton needs just 106 kills to move into sixth, the highest spot she can realistically reach in her career.

TOP 25 TAKEDOWN
With a win on Sunday over No. 21 Missouri, the Sooners picked up a win over a ranked opponent for the second straight season. The last time OU beat ranked opponents in back-to-back seasons was 2013 and 2014. The Sooners will have more opportunities to face ranked opponents in the back half of the SEC schedule with No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Kentucky, No. 9 Texas A&M and No. 17 Tennessee left on the schedule.

STATS & RANKINGS
The Sooners are well represented in the SEC rankings and have one player representing nationally. Kelli Jo Burgess is currently No. 1 in the SEC in hitting percentage with a .445 mark and No. 10 in blocks with 1.22 per set. Nationally, Burgess is No. 8 in hitting percentage.

Emoni Bush is No. 10 in aces with 0.38 per set. In conference matches only, Burgess is No. 6 in hitting percentage (.389) and No. 4 in blocks (1.65/set), Alexis Shelton is No. 10 in points (4.38/set) and Tekoa Barnes is No. 10 in aces (.33/set).

IN THE RECORD BOOKS
On Sept. 18, Kamille Gibson added her name to the record books as she recorded five aces against Central Arkansas in a three-set victory. Gibson is now the fourth Sooner to tally five aces in a three-set match in the 25-point rally scoring era.
As a team, the Sooners set three five-set program records on Oct. 5 against Missouri. The Sooners tallied 76 kills to surpass the previous total of 75 set at Iowa State in 2014. The squad hit an impressive .401, crushing the previous record of .314 against New Mexico in 2015. Avaya Maga & Harper Hall led the Sooners to a tie of the assist record with 72, last set in 2023 against Tulsa.

On Sunday, Sept. 21, the Sooners set a program record with 14 aces in a five-set match. Nine of the 14 came in the first set alone as Harper Hall recorded five in a row. The previous record in a five-set match was 13 in 2014 against CSUN. Fourteen aces are the most recorded in an OU match of any length in the 25-point rally scoring era.

THE KELLI JO SHOW
Redshirt junior Kelli Jo Burgess is quietly having the best season of her career. In 2024, Burgess tallied 78 kills in 21 matches and just one match with more than 10 kills. This season, Burgess has 105 kills and four double-digit performances. The Lehi, Utah, native, hit .238 in 2024 and is hitting .445 on 191 attempts this season, just nine attempts away from becoming eligible for the single season record for hitting percentage. The current record, set in 2013 by Sallie McLaurin, is .423, and only two players have ever hit over .400 in a career in the 25-point rally scoring era. Burgess has seven games with a hitting percentage over .500 and 10 games over .350.

On the defensive side, Burgess has tallied 67.0 blocks through 14 games. Her 8.0 blocks against Saint Mary's on Sept. 13 and Ole Miss on Sept. 26 tied her career high set in 2024. Burgess is the current leader in blocks, averaging 1.22 per set. She has 23 more blocks than the next closest athlete and leads the team with seven solo blocks.

ACES ARE HIGH
In 2024, the Sooners recorded 114 service aces over 26 matches with just one match in double-digits. This season, OU has tallied 96 aces in just 14 matches with four double-digit performances. OU posted back-to-back matches with at least 10 aces against Vanderbilt and Missouri. The Sooners have recorded at least one ace in 13 of 14 matches this season and at least five in 10 matches.
Emoni Bush leads the team with 21 on the season, followed by Tekoa Barnes with 18. Harper Hall as added 13, Sydney Thompson has 11 and Avaya Maga has 10.

FANTASTIC FRESHMEN
With the collegiate debut of Alyssa Flack on Oct. 5, all four signees from the class of 2024 have appeared in at least one match for the Sooners this season. Flack had a stellar debut, recording nine kills on a .333 mark after being sidelined due to a preseason injury. Tekoa Barnes has appeared in every match this season with 76 kills, 18 aces and 21 blocks, while Avaya Maga has been the starting setter in all 14 matches. Ada Awagu has appeared in five matches this season.

HOT START
The Sooners 8-2 start to the 2025 season was one of their best starts since 1997. This is the sixth time since 1996 that an OU squad has finished non-conference play with two or fewer losses and the seventh time with a winning percentage of .800 or higher in non-conference action. OU has gone 8-1 through its first nine games five times since 1996.
In conference play, OU is off to its best start since going 3-1 in 2019. If the Sooners can go 2-0 on the weekend, it will be the first time since 2014 that OU has five wins through its first six conference games.

SERIES HISTORY
SOUTH CAROLINA: Friday's meeting will be the seventh all-time between the two programs with the Gamecocks leading the series, 4-2. South Carolina won the first conference matchup between the two teams last season in Columbia, 3-1.

GEORGIA: Sunday's meeting is the eighth all-time between the Sooners and Bulldogs, with Georgia leading 5-2. The Sooners were victorious in a three-set battle in Athens in 2024 and will welcome Georgia to the Field House for the first time since 1986.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Sooners will take an extended road trip with three matches away from McCasland Field House. OU will face No. 9 Texas A&M on Oct. 17, No. 2 Texas on Oct. 19 and Florida on Oct. 22. The next home game for the Sooners is Sunday, Oct. 26 against Auburn.
