Trio of Sooners Collect AVCA All-Central Region Honors

December 10, 2024 | Volleyball

NORMAN – Oklahoma volleyball's Alexis Shelton, Kari Geissberger and Lydia Martyn were placed on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Central Region teams, the AVCA announced Tuesday.

Shelton and Martyn were placed on the first team, while Geissberger earned honorable mention honors. These are the first All-Region honors for the Sooners since Megan Wilson in 2022 and the most since OU placed four on region teams in 2019.

Shelton earned her first all-region honor after a breakout junior season. The Charlotte, N.C., native led the team with 455 kills on the season and 4.38 kills/set. She ranked second on the team in digs with 204 and second in blocks with 93.

The junior tallied double-digit kills in every meet of the season, including a season-best 27 against Texas. She recorded 20-plus kills on nine occasions and notched eight double-doubles on the year. In the season finale against Pitt, she recorded a career-high 7.0 blocks.

Martyn ended the year as one of eight active players who had eclipsed not only the 500-career block mark, but the 1,000-career kills milestone. The graduate student led the Sooners with 124 total blocks on the season and notched a .360 hitting percentage with 210 kills.

The Anderson, S.C., native tallied at least 5.0 blocks in 12 matches, including a season-high 11.0 at Tulsa. She notched double-digit kills in nine matches with a season-best 18, also against Tulsa.

In her lone season with the Sooners, Geissberger ranked second on the team with 262 kills on a .316 hitting mark. The Greenbrae, Calif., native recorded 83 blocks, good for second on the team with a season high 8.0 in the final match of the year.

Geissberger recorded double-digit kills in 15 matches with a season-high 18 against Florida. She hit at a .300 clip or better in 15 matches with a season-high .714 at Omaha.

Overall, the Sooners finished the 2024 season with a 15-11 record and a sixth-place finish in the SEC after being picked to finish 11th in their first year in the league. The Sooners eight conference wins were the most since 2019 and included a pair of wins over ranked opponents. OU advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019 and picked up their first NCAA Tournament win since 2013.
