NORMAN –
Undefeated and ranked No. 9 in the AP Poll, Oklahoma faces its first road challenge of the season on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. tipoff at Wichita State. The game, airing on ESPN+, marks the beginning of a five-game stretch away from Norman for the Sooners.
The Shockers (2-2) are fresh off a win over St. Thomas, defeating the Tommies 69-64 in Wichita last Saturday.
The game will be aired on 1520 KOKC with Chad McKee and Tyler Neal on the call.
THE STARTING FIVE
- Oklahoma is off to one of its best starts in program history, excelling on both ends of the court. Defensively, the Sooners have held all three opponents to under 30% shooting, a feat last accomplished in December 2006. OU hasn't held four consecutive teams under 30% shooting in at least 25 years.
- Offensively, the Sooners set a program record with 122 points in last Wednesday's win over Western Carolina, shooting 63.2%, the fifth-highest field goal percentage in school history. Oklahoma ranks third nationally in PPG (97.7) and fifth in margin of victory (47.3).
- OU has won three straight games by 30+ points for just the second time ever, and the first since the 1984-85 season. A 30-point win against Wichita State would set a program record for consecutive 30-point victories with four.
- For the second straight week, Oklahoma is the No. 9 team in the AP Poll. The Sooners' ascension to ninth marked the program's highest placement in the poll since the final poll of the 2009 season. The WBCA poll is released on Tuesday afternoon and OU was ranked No. 9 in the 11/12 poll.
- A win would push the Sooners to 4-0 for the second straight season.
LAST TIME OUT
Raegan Beers had 27 points and nine rebounds, and No. 9 Oklahoma set a school scoring record to roll past Western Carolina 122-56 on Wednesday. Beers was the AP Player of the Week for her dominant performances last week. The 6-foot-4 Oregon State transfer became the first Sooners player in 16 seasons to have back-to-back games with at least 20 points and 14 rebounds. She remained nearly unstoppable by making 12 of 14 field goals against the Catamounts.
Oklahoma's 66-point margin of victory was the fifth largest in school history and the biggest since a 73-point win over Central Arkansas in 2007. The Sooners scored 66 points in the second half alone — the third-most points in a half for OU since 1996.
The Sooners dished out 31 assists, the most by the program since 1996, surpassing last season's mark of 30 against Oral Roberts. Under head coach
Jennie Baranczyk, Oklahoma's 25 games with 25+ assists since 2021-22 rank second nationally.
OU shot 63.2% from the field, marking the fifth-best shooting performance in program history and the highest since a 2001 victory over Kansas. The Sooners dominated the boards, outrebounding Western Carolina 53-23, and have now outrebounded all three opponents this season by at least 25.
SERIES HISTORY
Tuesday's game marks the 23rd all-time meeting between Oklahoma and Wichita State and the first back-to-back matchups since 2002-04. The Sooners lead the series 15-7 and have won the last two meetings under coach Baranczyk.
