NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams compete in its first SEC Cross Country Championships hosted by Texas A&M at the Dale Watts Cross Country Course in Bryan College-Station, Texas, on Friday morning.
The OU women will run an 6K at 9:08 a.m. CT and the men will compete in the 8k at 9:50 a.m. CT. Oklahoma will feature 12 runners on the women's team and nine athletes for the men's.
Per USTFCCCA's week four regional poll released on Oct. 21, the OU women enter the championship No. 5 in the Midwest region, the program's best-ever ranking. The men's team is positioned at No. 8 in the Midwest, their highest ranking since 2016.
The Sooners concluded the regular season on Oct. 18 at the Arturo Barrios Invitational where both squads finished sixth overall. Grabbing two top-ten finishes for the Sooners, freshmen
Leah Jeruto earned second in the women's 6K and
Thobias Cheruiyot placed sixth in the men's 8K.
Jeruto's 19:00.1 finish was only 1.9 seconds slower than the Dale Watts Cross Country Course record. Graduate transfer
Megan Johnson was the Sooners' next-best finisher on the women's side, securing 35th and a career-best time of 20:14.3. Senior
Gabi Barrera followed in 48th with another PR of 20:25.6.
Cheruiyot shaved 28 seconds off the PR he set at the Joe Piane Invitational two weeks prior for a 22:34.4 time. OU collected seven more career records on the men's side, including senior
Colin Caso who finished 22nd (23:24.7) and fifth-year runner
Fernando Morales, who placed 23rd (23:44.0).
Jeruto and Cheruiyot swept SEC Runner of the Week honors on Oct. 22 for their performances at the Arturo Barrios Invitational, marking the third weekly conference award for Cheruiyot and the first for Jeruto this season.
