NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 10 Oklahoma baseball squad defeated Kansas by a score of 11-4 Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park to clinch the best-of-three series victory.
The Sooners (34-13, 12-9 Big 12 play) topped the Jayhawks (22-26, 9-14) in Friday's series opener.
Saturday's game was eerily similar as Kansas jumped on top first but lost the lead thanks to some poor defensive plays. KU followed up last night's performance that included four errors with five more miscues on Saturday.
Right-hander Burch Smith (8-3) took advantage of the Kansas mistakes and the Sooner run support, lasting seven innings in the start. Smith allowed just three runs (one earned) on the day to go along eight strikeouts and no walks.
"I like the way he responded," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway on Smith after giving up a pair of early runs. "He seemed like an angry guy and got after it."
The Sooners offense continued their hot streak from game one as every starter had a hit, and all but two in the lineup recorded at least one RBI.
Erik Ross led the way and tied a career high with three RBIs.
"I just thought our guys did a good job of executing the game baseball; that's what's important," said Golloway. "You don't know when you're going to need it. You see today's score and yesterday's score and you don't think that stuff is important. We did a lot of things right today."
The Jayhawks struck first again against the Sooners in their first at bat, as shortstop Brandon Macias scored off a double to center field by Jimmy Walters. Right-fielder Casey Lytle score an unearned run in the second to go up 2-0.
Oklahoma countered and scored three runs in the bottom of the second to gain their first lead of the afternoon. The Sooners never looked back, scoring two more in the third, one in the fourth and five in the sixth inning.
Kansas pitcher Tanner Poppe (2-5) recorded the loss for the Jayhawks despite each batter in the KU offense recording a hit.
The third and final game of the Oklahoma-Kansas series is set for Sunday, May 8 at 1 p.m. CT.
Right-handed senior Bobby Shore (2-2) will start on the mound for the Sooners opposite freshman right-hander Alex Cox (3-3).
"When I went down the line (after the game), I asked them if tomorrow was important and their response to me, let me know that I didn't need to say anything else. We'll be ready to go," said Golloway.
