NORMAN, Okla. – Michael Rocha pitched his fifth complete game of the year and Max White had a career-high four hits as the No. 8 Sooners won 6-2 on Friday night in the series opener with visiting New Mexico.
The Sooners have won six straight games and improved to 36-13 overall, while New Mexico dropped to 16-33.
Rocha (10-2) surrendered two runs off of seven hits in nine innings of work after taking a perfect game into the sixth inning. The senior leads the Big 12 with five complete games this season and is the first Sooner to have five complete games in a season since 2006, when Daniel McCutchen accomplished the feat. In addition, the last OU hurler to win 10 games in the regular season was Steven Guerra (2006).
“I feel like its something that I was taught early on and throughout high school, I never came out of a game. Summer leagues ... never came out of a game,” said Rocha on going the distance. “I got here and it was a little different for me, it was a longer game and it took a little adjusting. I feel like, for the most start, a starter should be able to go the distance and I just want to fill that role for my team.”
“I thought he was very efficient and pitched really well,” said Golloway on Rocha.
Offensively, the Sooners struck early with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first, with Erik Ross and Ricky Eisenberg crossing the plate courtesy of two Lobo errors.
OU added to its lead in the fourth inning with White's single that scored Evan Mistich.
Eisenberg gave the Sooners a 4-0 lead in the seventh, scoring his second run of the night off of a double by Garrett Buechele and OU tacked on two more in the eighth with runs by White and Cameron Seitzer.
After being shutout for eight innings, New Mexico scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth off Rocha.
The game featured quiet bullpens from both squads as New Mexico's Rudy Jaramillo (4-7) tossed all eight innings for the Lobos. The matchup also featured a quick pace-of-play, being played in 1 hour and 52 minutes, the fastest game of the year.
The Sooners and Lobos return to action Saturday in a doubleheader at L. Dale Mitchell Park. First pitch for game one will be at 3 p.m. with game two starting approximately a half of an hour after the conclusion of game one. Both games can be heard on the Sooners Sports Network, KREF 1400 AM.
“We have to keep the momentum going,” added Golloway.
