Oklahoma Head Coach Sherri Coale
On the game:
“We weren't very disciplined tonight. Defensively we were out of control and on our heels. We forced a lot of turnovers in the first half but we didn't do a good job of getting back. We were never getting set and matching up. I was really disappointed in our defensive effort but it got better in second half.”
On Mercer guard Lindsey Lowrie:
“They were very hot in the first half and (Lindsey) Lowrie was on fire from the 3-point line. She made a couple of really tough shots when we were there contesting but she also got some wide open looks.”
On Oklahoma's offense:
“We were just going too fast on offense and just trying to make everything happen at once. I talked to them at halftime about letting offense happen and making things happen on the defensive end and we had it flipped around. D-Rob (Danielle Robinson) finally got it under control and had some rhythm, then everything else started to fall into place.”
“I thought that Abi (Olajuwon) was fantastic. A.T. (Amanda Thompson) came on and did some great things tonight. One thing we can't do tonight is go how many ever minutes before Whitney Hand gets a shot. We were so sped up early on and I think that is being eager to play and being excited to get the season started. Once we started to settle down into rhythm, we started to get her some looks.”
On upcoming opponent Georgia:
“ We have to be ready to go against Georgia. We can't have the cold spell that we had to start the game and survive there.”
Oklahoma Junior Guard Danielle Robinson
On the first half turnovers:
“I think it was just us going too fast. I know most of mine were because I was playing too fast. That's how we started the first half. Everybody is looking to do the hardest thing when the simple thing is right there in front of us. We were just overlooking the simple pass and simple plays.
“I felt like I could not stay on my feet at all, and I was rushing a lot of stuff. I just need to take my time and slow my game down a bit and not force things.”
On scoring in spurts:
“Coming out of timeouts we weren't performing as well as we wanted to and Coach (Coale) said we need to make a run and so we just had to buckle down and show some discipline. One play led to another and we just made the run that we needed to.”
Oklahoma Senior Center Abi Olajuwon
On her adjustment to being started:
“I'm just trying to get used to the system again and calm down and just do the simple things that I do in practice and just let that correlate into the game.”
“I feel comfortable with this team, and outside of Courtney and Ashley (Paris) we have a lot of the same people on this team. We have a lot of veterans on this team. We play really hard through practice and even in pick-ups and that shows on the court.”
Mercer Head Coach Designate Kenneth Cooper
On the game:
“We played well in spurts. Oklahoma is of course a good team. They've got some big-time All-Americans. Their post game is a little over-powering for our posts. I think our girls played well from the jump. They had a lot of good guard play and our posts fought hard. We tried to give them the best match we could.”
On the Oklahoma girls on their roster:
“We have Lacy Ramon; she's from Norman and she played well. We have Latoya Jackson, who is our leading returning scorer from Oklahoma City. She's been here three years with us. She played good as far as being where she needed to be, but she didn't have one of her scoring nights like she usually does. Lorin Hammer, another guard, came in and gave us some good minutes offensively, moved the ball around.”
On how this game prepared them for future Big 12 opponents this season:
“I think this helped out a lot. It's always good when you play against the best so you can see what they're doing. We'll play Oklahoma State on Dec. 19, and then on to Texas Tech on Dec. 21.”
