Sooners Come Up Short at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA – Oklahoma volleyball dropped a four-set decision to undefeated Georgia Tech Tuesday night, falling 3-1 (15-25, 19-25, 25-23, 21-25) at O'Keefe Gym as part of the SEC/ACC Showdown at the Net.Ā 

After Georgia Tech (7-0) took control of the match with wins in the opening two sets, Oklahoma (3-2) responded with its best frame of the night in the third, hitting .389 and closing out a back-and-forth set, 25-23. The Sooners looked to extend the match in the fourth, but the Yellow Jackets pulled away to secure the four-set victory.

Oklahoma finished with 55 kills while hitting .319 for the match, its second-highest hitting percentage of the season. Georgia Tech countered with a .343 clip and 47 kills while holding advantages in service aces (10-5) and blocks (7.5-4).

Senior Elise Hani paced the Oklahoma offense with 13 kills without an error on 21 swings, hitting .619. Sophomore Tekoa Barnes matched Hani with 13 kills on a .409 clip and added five digs and two aces. Junior Alaleh Tolliver finished with 11 kills and four digs, while sophomore Alyssa Flack added 10 kills. Junior Carley Butler chipped in seven kills on a .353 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Avaya Maga directed the Sooners to their .319 hitting percentage with 48 assists and six digs. Sophomore Aniya Warren led Oklahoma defensively with eight digs, while junior Kinsley Singleton added seven.

SET ONE
Oklahoma scored the first two points of the match before Georgia Tech worked its way in front at 5-4. The Yellow Jackets created separation with a 4-0 run to build a 10-5 advantage. OU pulled within two at 13-11, but Georgia Tech answered and used another run to stretch its lead to 21-12. The Yellow Jackets closed out the opening set, 25-15.

SET TWO
The teams traded points early in the second before Oklahoma used a Hani kill to take its first lead at 8-7. The Sooners remained in front at 11-10, but Georgia Tech responded with a 7-1 run to build a 17-12 advantage. OU pulled within three at 18-15 before the Yellow Jackets regained control and took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-19 victory.

SET THREE
Oklahoma responded in a tightly contested third set that featured ties throughout. Georgia Tech used a 4-0 run to turn an 11-10 deficit into a 14-11 advantage, but the Sooners continued to battle and eventually pulled even at 16-16. Neither side led by more than a point until OU broke a 21-21 tie with consecutive points to take a 23-21 lead. Tolliver gave Oklahoma set point with a kill at 24-22 before the Sooners closed out the frame, 25-23, to extend the match.

SET FOUR
Georgia Tech built the first significant advantage of the fourth, using a 4-0 run to take a 9-4 lead. Oklahoma continued to battle but the Yellow Jackets maintained their advantage through the middle of the set. The Sooners worked to close the gap late, but Georgia Tech held on for a 25-21 win to close out the match.
