OU Releases New Football Game Day Driving Maps, Travel Tips

NORMAN — With the University of Oklahoma's football home opener 11 days away, OU Athletics, in conjunction with the Norman and OU police departments, released on Monday new game day driving maps and recommended protocols to improve traffic flow in Norman, particularly around Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
Athletics department and law enforcement officials indicate the single best way fans can improve their game day experience is to plan ahead. That means identifying the best travel route, knowing where to park and allowing extra travel time to arrive and leave safely.
Fans are also highly encouraged to use the new routing maps instead of GPS since normal phone and other mapping software does not account for game day road closures and often leads visitors to closed routes. Additional important game day travel tips:
1. Plan Ahead: Before leaving for the game, review traffic routes, parking locations and expected congestion areas.
2. Know Your Best Route: Traffic patterns vary depending on where you're traveling from. Identify the most efficient route to Norman based on your starting location before game day.
3. Leave Early: Heavy traffic is expected several hours before kickoff. Allow extra travel time to avoid delays and reduce stress.
4. Use Official Traffic Guidance: Follow posted game day traffic signs and direction from law enforcement and traffic personnel. Routes may differ from your normal travel patterns.
5. Have a Parking Plan: Know your parking destination before you arrive. Entering the game day area without a parking plan can lead to additional delays.
6. Expect Delays Near Campus: Increased pedestrian traffic, road closures and high vehicle volumes will impact travel times around the stadium.
7. Monitor Traffic Conditions: Check real-time traffic updates before departing and while en route, when safe to do so.
8. Carpool When Possible: Fewer vehicles on the road help improve traffic flow and parking availability for everyone.
9. Safety First: Stay alert for pedestrians, cyclists and game day traffic control personnel throughout the game day environment.
10. Vehicle Security: Lock vehicle doors, roll up windows and take keys/fobs with you. Don't leave valuables in your car in plain view.
11. Train Safety: Always stay clear of railroad tracks. If for some reason a train stops, never crawl under, over or through it.
