CARLSBAD, Calif. – Oklahoma men's golf made its move at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, climbing four spots into 11th place after 36 holes at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad.

The Sooners (11th, E) fired a 4-under 284 in the second round, recording the day's second-largest rise on the leaderboard among the 30 teams in the field. Oklahoma enters Sunday's third round five shots clear of the 54-hole cut line and four shots outside the top eight needed to advance to match play.

"I thought we did a good job responding today," head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We moved in the right direction and put ourselves in position heading into a big day tomorrow. There's still a lot of golf left, and if we stay patient and continue to trust what we're doing, we'll give ourselves a chance to be where we want to be heading into Monday."

The field will be trimmed from 30 teams to 15 following Sunday's third round. Monday's final round of stroke play will determine the eight teams that advance to match play, with quarterfinal and semifinal matches scheduled for Tuesday and the national championship match set for Wednesday.

Matthew Troutman paced the Sooners on Saturday, carding a 3-under 69 to move into a tie for 26th at 2-under through 36 holes. The senior made the turn at 1-over before catching fire on the back nine, recording four birdies to post Oklahoma's low round of the day. The Louisville, Ky., native is making his second NCAA Championships appearance, and his 2-under total through 36 holes is tied for the eighth-lowest score by a Sooner through two rounds of the NCAA Championships ever.

Sophomore Clark Van Gaalen continued his steady play with a 1-under 71. The Turlock, Calif., product offset two bogeys with three birdies and sits tied for 33rd at 1-under for the championship.

Jase Summy, who was named to the PING All-Central Region Team during Saturday's round, also posted a 1-under 71 and is tied for 65th at 2-over.

Ryder Cowan, also an All-Region selection, followed his opening-round even-par 72 with a 1-over 73 and is tied for 52nd at 1-over through 36 holes, while PJ Maybank carded a 2-over 74 and enters Sunday's round tied for 126th at 8-over.

Top-ranked Auburn leads the championship at 20-under after posting a 16-under team score on Saturday. Texas and Vanderbilt are tied for second at 12-under, while Oklahoma State and UCLA round out the top five at 7-under. Duke, Virginia and Arizona currently occupy the remaining match-play positions at 4-under entering the final two rounds of stroke play.

Arizona's Filip Jakubcik holds the individual lead at 10-under par. Should Oklahoma not advance beyond Sunday's cut to 15 teams, the top nine individuals from non-advancing teams would compete Monday for the individual national championship.

Oklahoma is making its 15th consecutive NCAA Championships appearance and has advanced beyond the 54-hole cut in eight of the last nine championships, reaching match play seven times during that span.

The Sooners tee off at 9:47 a.m. CT on Sunday as they look to continue their climb up the leaderboard.
