Sooners in Contention After Round One at NCAA Championships

May 29, 2026 | Men's Golf

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Oklahoma remains firmly in contention for a spot in match play after opening the NCAA Men's Golf Championships with a 4-over 292 on Friday at Omni La Costa's Championship Course.

The Sooners (T15, +4), who teed off on No. 10 in the afternoon wave, sit tied for 15th at 4-over par through 18 holes. Oklahoma currently occupies the 54-hole cut line and trails the projected top-eight cut for match play by just five strokes.

"We played well on the first nine today, but would've liked to have put together a more complete round," head coach Ryan Hybl said. "There's so much golf left out here and no one really knows where they stand until after tomorrow's round. We know we've got to go out with an attack mindset in the morning and put together the round we know we can."

The 30-team field will be reduced to 15 teams following Sunday's third round, while Monday's final round of stroke play will determine the eight teams that advance to match play. Quarterfinal and semifinal matches are scheduled for Tuesday, with the national championship match set for Wednesday.

Ryder Cowan and Clark Van Gaalen paced the Sooners with even-par 72s. Both did all of their scoring on their opening nine holes, with Cowan turning in 3-under and Van Gaalen making the turn at 2-under. Oklahoma played its first nine holes at even par but managed just three birdies on Nos. 1-9 and finished its second nine at 4-over.

Cowan and Van Gaalen are tied for 35th individually at even par. The rounds marked Cowan's 26th and Van Gaalen's 22nd par-or-better rounds of the season.

Matthew Troutman carded a 1-over 73 and sits tied for 57th after opening with birdies on Nos. 1, 2 and 3 during a 2-under back nine. Jase Summy is tied for 91st after a 3-over 75, while PJ Maybank III is tied for 130th following a 6-over 78.

UCLA leads the team standings at 8-under par, followed by Auburn at 4-under, Pepperdine at 3-under, and Duke and San Diego at 2-under.

Individually, San Diego's Ian Maspat, Arizona State's Connor Williams and Alabama's William Jennings share the lead at 6-under par.

Oklahoma returns to the course Saturday for round two, teeing off at 10:20 a.m. CT.

Live scoring is available on Clippd, while Babygrande Golf will provide a live stream of the second round.
