Men's Tennis Complete Competition at Fayetteville Futures

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The Oklahoma men's tennis team wrapped up its run at the Fayetteville Futures M15, with junior Alejandro Melero, seniors Asahi Harazaki and Dragos Cazacu, sophomore Johan Rodriguez and freshmen Daniel Uta and Tito Chavez representing the Sooners in qualifying and the main draw.

Rodriguez turned in the deepest singles run of the week for Oklahoma. The No. 6 seed from Melgar, Colombia, opened the main draw with a 6-3, 6-4 win over former Texas A&M standout Jerry Roddick, then defeated teammate Melero, 7-5, 6-4, in the second round. Rodriguez advanced to the quarterfinals, where he fell to former Texas standout Jonah Braswell, 6-2, 6-4.

Melero battled through qualifying to reach the main draw, opening with a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 14-seed Tyler Bowers of Auburn before defeating former Ole Miss standout Isac Stroemberg, 6-4, 7-5. In the first round of the main draw, Melero dropped the opening set to Arizona's Alejandro Arcila, 2-6, before taking control with a 6-4, 6-0 finish. His singles run ended in the second round against Rodriguez.

Chavez opened main draw play with a three-set win over Arkansas' Gabriel Elicha Navas, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. He fell in the second round to No. 1-seed Theo Papamalamis of Texas A&M, 7-5, 6-2.

Cazacu, the No. 4 seed, won a three-set battle over Arkansas' Jakub Vrba in the first round, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-4. Arizona's Alexander Rozin ended his run in the second round, rallying to win 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Harazaki fell in the main draw first round to Braswell, 6-4, 6-4. Uta, the No. 5 seed in qualifying, dropped his first-round match to Stroemberg, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, Chavez and Melero made the deepest run for the Sooners. The duo opened with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-8 win over Canadians Volodymyr Gurenko and Alvin Nicholas Tudorica, then advanced to the semifinals by walkover. Former Texas A&M duo Roddick and Togan Tokac ended their run, 3-6, 6-4, 10-3.

Harazaki and Rodriguez fell in the first round to No. 4-seeds Arcila and Rozin of Arizona, 6-2, 6-7(5), 10-5. Cazacu and Uta also dropped their first-round match to Mississippi State's Segundo Goity Zapico and Luigi Valletta, 6-0, 7-6(0).

UP NEXT
The Sooners continue fall tournament play next weekend at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Lincoln, Neb. Competition begins on Wednesday, Oct. 7, and continues through Sunday, Oct. 11. Draws, schedules and further tournament information will be released prior to the start of the tournament.
