NORMAN – Oklahoma men's gymnastics freshmen Sasha Bogonosiuk and Nathan Roman earned CGA national awards this week after their performances in Oklahoma's win at the MPSF Championship on Saturday in Berkeley, Calif., the College Gymnastics Association announced Wednesday. Bogonosiuk was named CGA Rookie of the Week and Roman was named CGA Specialist of the Week.
The first-year Sooners led No. 1 Oklahoma to its 21st MPSF title (second straight) and 29th conference title overall. OU registered the highest team score in the nation this season with its 332.100 on Saturday.
Bogonosiuk set career highs on floor exercise and parallel bars. He placed second on floor with a stuck 14.300 and finished fourth on parallel bars with a stuck 14.050. His 9.350 execution score on parallel bars was the highest of the meet. He also posted a 13.750 on vault. The Buffalo Grove, Ill., product ranks among the nation's top eight on three events: fourth on floor (13.900), sixth on vault (14.138) and eighth on parallel bars (13.625). He is the highest-ranked freshman in the country on floor and vault and the second-highest ranked rookie on parallel bars.
Roman won the MPSF individual parallel bars title with a 14.700, the highest score in the nation on the event this season. His 5.4 difficulty score was the highest in the field, and his 14.700 surpassed his previous nation-best mark of 14.650. The Poway, Calif., product is ranked No. 1 nationally on parallel bars with his 14.325 National Qualifying Average.
This is Bogonosiuk's third CGA Rookie of the Week honor this season, as he previously earned the award on Jan. 22 and March 4. This is Roman's first CGA Specialist of the Week honor and his third CGA award overall after being named Rookie of the Week on Jan. 28 and March 25.
Oklahoma has now won 10 CGA weekly awards this season. Sophomore Francisco Velez Belendez was named CGA Co-Specialist of the Week on March 11, and Bogonosiuk earned Rookie of the Week honors on Jan. 22 and March 4. Redshirt senior Fuzzy Benas was named CGA Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 11 and Specialist of the Week on Feb. 4, while redshirt freshman Colby Aranda earned Rookie of the Week honors on Feb. 11.
The Sooners will compete for their 13th national title at the NCAA Championships next weekend, April 17-18, at the State Farm Center in Champaign, Ill. Two qualifying sessions will be held on Friday, April 17 (1 p.m. and 7 p.m. CT) with the finals slated for 6 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 18. The qualifiers will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the finals will be televised on ESPN2.
