ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Through 36 holes of stroke play at the SEC Championship, Oklahoma men's golf sits in fifth place at 17-under par, holding a six-shot cushion inside the match play cut with one round remaining.
The 16th-ranked Sooners slipped from second to fifth after Thursday's round but remain in control of their position heading into Friday's final 18 holes, after which the field will be trimmed to eight teams for match play which begins Saturday.
Oklahoma's All-American duo of
Jase Summy and
Ryder Cowan continued to pace the lineup, with Summy climbing into second place and Cowan sitting eighth.
Summy fired a second straight 5-under 65 at the par-70 Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club to move to 10-under overall, just two shots back of Auburn's Jackson Koivun. The senior carded six birdies against one bogey after opening the championship with a bogey-free round. His 36-hole total of 130 ties for the fourth-best score in SEC Championship history and sits two shots better than former Sooner
Drew Goodman's runner-up pace from last season. Summy will look to track down Koivun, the two-time defending SEC champion, in Friday's final round.
The Keller, Texas, native is aiming to become the ninth Sooner to win an individual conference title and the first since Grant Hirschman shared the 2018 Big 12 crown. An outright victory would mark Oklahoma's first solo conference champion since Jack Moore in 1957.
Cowan, the first-round leader, carded a 1-over 71 and is tied for eighth at 7-under. The junior remains within striking distance entering the final round.
The rest of the Sooners sit outside the top 50, led by
Clark Van Gaalen (T66, +5), who posted an even-par 70, five shots better than his opening round.
Cameron Cheek and
PJ Maybank III are tied for 53rd at 1-over for the week.
Top-ranked Auburn leads the field at 27-under following a championship-record 36-hole total, with Texas (-22), Ole Miss (-21) and Florida (-20) just ahead of Oklahoma. South Carolina currently holds the eighth and final match play position at 12-under, with Vanderbilt one shot back and several teams within reach.
Oklahoma will be paired with Texas A&M, Mississippi State and South Carolina for Friday's final round, teeing off between 7 and 8 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available on Clippd.
