Chavez Ties SEC Record With Eighth Freshman Weekly Honor

March 02, 2026 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – For a league-record eighth time, Oklahoma freshman guard Aaliyah Chavez has been named SEC Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week.

Her eight honors tie Kentucky's Rhyne Howard (2018-19) for the most freshman weekly awards in SEC history and leave Chavez one shy of Courtney Paris' Oklahoma record for a single season.

Chavez averaged 17.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.0 steals across Oklahoma's two games last week. She opened the stretch by helping lead the Sooners to a 45-point win over Arkansas, finishing with 16 points, four assists and two steals. Chavez also knocked down both of her free throws to extend her streak to 49 consecutive makes, setting an SEC record.

She followed with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists Sunday at Missouri, extending her run of double-digit scoring to 23 straight, which includes ever SEC contest.

One of the most decorated recruits in the country, Chavez arrived in Norman as the consensus national high school player of the year and the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 class. She has quickly delivered at the college level. A national freshman of the year contender, Chavez leads all qualifying true freshmen in scoring, her six 25-point games are more than every other SEC freshman combined and her 21 15-point games lead all first-year players.

The Lubbock, Texas, product also paced SEC freshmen in scoring during the regular season and is the only freshman nationally averaging at least 18.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game. She is one of just two players since 2009 to reach those marks with fewer than 3.0 turnovers per game, joining Paige Bueckers.

Chavez and the Sooners earned the No. 5 seed in this week's SEC Tournament and will face the winner of Mississippi State and Florida on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
