NORMAN — Oklahoma redshirt junior quarterback John Mateer was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week after accounting for three touchdowns and leading the Sooners to a 24-13 win over No. 15 Michigan Saturday night at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, the conference office announced Monday.
Mateer completed 21 of 34 passes (62%) for 270 yards and one touchdown and registered team highs of 19 rushes, 74 yards and touchdowns of 2 and 10 yards. The Little Elm, Texas, product led OU on a 12-play, 75-yard drive to open the game, which resulted in a 9-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Deion Burks. His first rushing TD came with 22 seconds left in the first half and made the score 14-0, and his second extended OU's lead to 21-7 with 10:12 remaining in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter while protecting an eight-point lead, he led the Sooners on a 16-play, 78-yard drive that consumed 8:27 and resulted in a field goal and a 24-13 lead with 1:44 to play.
Through two games this season, Mateer has completed 72% of his passes (51 of 71 for 662 yards and four touchdowns). His 662 passing yards are the second most by an OU quarterback through the first two games of a career (Josh Heupel had 773 in the first two contests of the 1999 season). He ranks second nationally and leads the SEC in total offense (380.8 yards per game) and ranks sixth nationally in passing yards per game (331.0; leads SEC).
