Three Gymnasts Named First Team Academic All-Americans

July 09, 2025 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN – Oklahoma men's gymnastics athletes Matthew Burgoyne, Emre Dodanli and Ignacio Yockers were named to the College Sports Communicators 2024-25 Academic All-America Men's At-Large First Team, CSC announced Wednesday.

The trio represents the first OU's men's gymnasts to earn Academic All-America honors since 2019. This is the second time Oklahoma has produced three first-team Academic All-Americans from one sport in a single year (softball in 2023 was the other).

Burgoyne won the Elite 90 award for men's gymnastics and earned All-America status on still rings at the NCAA Championships. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA in health and exercise science through his four years of college. A product of Lansdale, Pa., Burgoyne is a two-time MPSF All-Academic Team selection and was a CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big 12 honoree in 2024. He ranked second nationally on rings (14.025 NQA) and in the top 20 on floor exercise (19th, 13.563 NQA) and parallel bars (20th, 13.313 NQA) through the regular season. He was named a CGA Regular Season All-American on still rings and was an MPSF All-Conference selection on rings after scoring 14.000 at the conference championship, helping OU win the MPSF title.

In 2025, Dodanli won the NCAA high bar title, the MPSF high bar title and was a Nissen-Emery Award finalist. A senior captain, he was the 2024 CGA Specialist of the Year, a six-time All-American and nine-time Regular Season All-American and a 2024 Olympian (he competed at the Paris games with his native Turkey). He was one of only two gymnasts nationally this season ranked among the top 10 on three events entering the NCAA Championships (floor exercise, vault and high bar), and the only one ranked in the top 7 on three events. The Milton, Ontario, product, who led the team with seven event titles in 2023 and 13 in 2024, won 31 career event titles. Academically, Dodanli, a health and exercise science major with a 3.72 GPA, has been named as a CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete each year (2025 honors are expected to be announced later this summer) and is a three-time member of the MPSF All-Academic Team (2023, '24 and '25).

A rising senior, Yockers has a cumulative 4.0 GPA as a double major in mathematics and computer science. He is a two-time CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete and two-time MPSF All-Academic Team selection. The Tulsa, Okla., product won the 2024 MPSF pommel horse title, was a 2023 All-American on pommel horse and has earned CGA Regular Season All-America and MPSF All-Conference honors on pommel horse in each of his three seasons.

OU men's gymnastics has now produced nine Academic All-Americans and five first-team selections. The previous five athletes were: Jeremy Killen (1996, second team), Huy Ly (2000, second team), David Johnston (2002, first team), Brett Covey (2003, third team) and Brian Schibler (2018, second team; 2019, first team).
