LEXINGTON, Ky. – After multiple bouts of weather delays, the No. 12/20 Oklahoma men's and women's track and field team closed out the second day of the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday evening at the Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Complex. Day Two was highlighted by
Leah Jeruto's silver medal in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Oklahoma's first podium finish of the meet.
After eight scored events, the women's team ranks eighth with 20 points and the men 11th with 12 points.
Jeruto, an All-American, entered the race ranked second in the conference behind Alabama's Doris Lemngole. The duo quickly separated themselves from the pack within the first 400 meters. Lemngole put a significant lead on the Sooner by the fourth lap, but Jeruto maintained her distance from the rest of the field. She averaged an 8.6 second lead on the third-place finisher, Texas A&M's Debora Cherono. Jeruto crossed the line in 9:53.93 and added 8 points to the team score.
Pippi Lotta Enok counted another score for the women's team in the long jump. She registered a 6.15m (20'2.25") mark on her fourth attempt for fifth place and 4 points. Also in the event,
Kendall Johnson had a breakthrough performance with a season-best leap of 6.00m (19'8.25"), narrowly missing scoring position in ninth place.
SEC indoor bronze medalist
Colton Rhodes scored for the Sooners with sixth place in the pole vault. He cleared an outdoor career-best 5.40m (17'8.50") for 3 points, also earning a position at No. 10 on OU's all-time performance list.
The men added two scores from
Anthony Riley and
Ralford Mullings to close out the night. In the shot put, Mullings launched the implement to 18.66m (61'2.75") for seventh place (2 points) and Riley leaped 7.67m (25'2.00") for eighth place (1 point) in the long jump.
Paige Low added a top-10 finish in the women's shot put, securing her spot in the event final. She tossed 16.39m (53'9.25") for ninth place and was out just one placement from scoring.
