LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 12/20 Oklahoma men's and women's track and field team wrapped up day one of the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday night at the Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Complex. After scoring three events, the women sit in fifth (8 points) and the men sixth (6 points) with 19 disciplines remaining on the weekend.
Women's hammer throw duo of
Kennedy Clarke and
Kassidy Gallagher earned the first scores for Oklahoma Thursday morning. Clarke finished fifth with a 62.80m (206'0.00") toss to gain 4 points and Gallagher followed closely in sixth, registering 62.66m (205'7.00") for 3 points.
Later in the evening,
Kassidy Sani tossed a career-best 51.03m (167'5.00") in the javelin for eighth place and 1 point toward the Sooners' total. Sani's throw improves her position at No. 7 all-time in Oklahoma outdoor history and ranks 20th in the NCAA West qualifying region.
Danny Doheny improved the count for OU in the men's javelin, tossing 67.69m (221'1.00") on his third attempt for seventh place and 2 points.
In a gutsy 10,000-meter race late Thursday night,
Thobias Cheruiyot finished fifth with a time of 30:21.58 to earn 4 points for the Sooners. He joined the front pack early on, leading within the top-five from the 12th to 24th lap, only to be surpassed in the last 400 meters.
Abby Jepchirchir solidified a lane in the 800-meter final that will take place Saturday evening. With an impressive third-place finish in heat one, she clocked a career-best 2:04.92, the sixth-best overall time in the preliminary round. Jepchirchir also climbs to No. 2 all-time in Oklahoma history and secures a No. 31-ranking in the NCAA West qualifying region.
In the decathlon,
Nicolas Bersier posted career bests in all five events to conclude his day in fifth place with 3,829 points. His field-leading events included the 100-meter dash (10.74) and the long jump (7.18m (23'6.75")).
Due to predicted inclement weather, Friday events will be moved up, beginning with the decathlon at 10 a.m. CT and ending with the men's 3000-meter steeplechase at 4:35 p.m. CT. Live results of the meet can be viewed on
