Velez Belendez, Williams Win MPSF Annual Awards

April 03, 2025 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN – Oklahoma men's gymnastics newcomer Francisco Velez Belendez was named the MPSF Freshman of the Year and head coach Mark Williams was named conference Coach of the Year, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced Thursday.

This is Williams' second straight and 16th MPSF Coach of the Year award in his 26 seasons at the helm. Velez Belendez is the second Sooner to claim the conference's Freshman of the Year honor (following Nico Hamilton last season).

A product of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Velez Belendez ranks fifth nationally on still rings with his 13.917 average. He has competed in seven meets this season and registered five scores of 13.800 or higher on rings. He is the only freshman in the country with as many still rings scores of 13.800 or better. His season high of 14.350 is the third-highest rings score recorded nationally this season. Velez Belendez was named CGA Rookie of the Week on Feb. 12 after notching a career-high 14.350 against Stanford and Greenville. He was also named MPSF Freshman of the Week three times (Jan. 21, Feb. 19 and March 4).

Williams has led the Sooners to a No. 1 national ranking for 11 of 12 weeks with a 327.183 four-score average through the regular season. Oklahoma ranks first nationally on floor exercise (55.267), second on pommel horse (54.667), rings (55.350), vault (56.300) and high bar (54.667) and ranks fifth on parallel bars (53.000). OU's 55.900 on high bar against Illinois on Jan. 25 is still the best score nationally this season. OU's 330.700 against the Illini was the nation's highest team score until mid-March. The Sooners have registered five scores of 325.000 or better and have five of the top 15 team scores recorded in the country this season. OU gymnasts collected 11 MPSF weekly conference awards this season.

The No. 1-ranked Sooners compete against No. 2 Stanford, No. 9 Air Force and No. 10 California in the MPSF Championship on Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo., hosted by the Air Force Academy. The meet is set for a 5 p.m. CT start. A subscription-based live stream will be available via Overnght, and live scoring will be available via Virti.us.
