Burgoyne Named Elite 90 Award Winner

NORMAN – Oklahoma senior Matthew Burgoyne is the recipient of the NCAA ELITE 90 award for the 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Gymnastics Championship.
Burgoyne, majoring in health and exercise science, currently carries a 4.0 GPA. Burgoyne was presented with the award at the NCAA Championships banquet Thursday night in Ann Arbor, Mich.
A product of Lansdale, Pa., Burgoyne has competed in 18 meets over his two seasons with the Sooners (he was a member of the OU club program for two years). He is a two-time MPSF All-Academic Team selection and was a CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big 12 honoree in 2024.
This season, Burgoyne ranks second nationally on still rings (14.025 NQA) and in the top 20 on floor exercise (19th, 13.563 NQA) and parallel bars (20th, 13.313 NQA). He was named a CGA Regular Season All-American on still rings and was an MPSF All-Conference selection on rings after scoring 14.000 at the conference championship, helping OU win the MPSF title. He has won three event titles this season, all on rings (vs. Air Force on Jan. 12, vs. Illinois on Jan. 25 and at Ohio State on Feb. 2). He was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week on March 4 after his performance in Oklahoma's meet at California/vs. Nebraska on Feb. 28. In that meet, he registered career highs on floor exercise (14.100) and parallel bars (13.800), and also scored 13.600 on rings, compiling a three-score total of 41.500.
The Elite 90 award honors the exceptional achievements of student-athletes. This prestigious accolade is given to those who have not only excelled at a national championship level in their sport but have also achieved the highest academic standards among their peers. The Elite 90 is proudly awarded to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above academically who have participated in a sport for at least two years with their school. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
Burgoyne is the sixth Oklahoma student-athlete to earn the Elite 90 award, and this is the fifth straight year a Sooner has won an Elite 90 award. Previous OU winners were Kim Moldenhauer (rowing, 2013-13), C.J. Cole (men's basketball, 2015-16), Lily Miyazaki (women's tennis, 2017-18), Emma LaPinta (women's gymnastics, 2020-21 and 2021-22) and Meillin Sullivan (women's gymnastics, 2022-23 and 2023-24).
