Sooners Advance to SEC Quarterfinal, Beat Georgia by 18

March 06, 2025 | Women's Basketball

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) Raegan Beers had 22 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, and No. 10 Oklahoma extended its winning streak to eight games with a 70-52 victory over Georgia on Thursday in the second round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

Oklahoma's win sets up a rematch Friday with No. 12 Kentucky, which handed the Sooners their most recent loss on Feb. 2, 95-86. That victory proved to be a key tiebreaker, allowing the Wildcats to earn the last remaining double bye in the tournament over the Sooners after the teams finished tied for fourth in conference play.

Liz Scott added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Sooners (24-6).

Trinity Turner led Georgia (13-19) with 12 points.

Georgia had no answer for Beers' size in the low post and the Sooners were content to take advantage, repeatedly pounding the ball inside to the 6-foot-4 junior. Beers finished 9 of 14 from the floor and had eight points in the third quarter, including a buzzer beater off the glass as Oklahoma took a 15-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

TAKEAWAYS

Georgia: Despite having plenty of open looks, the Bulldogs shot just 28% from the field and finished 4 of 20 from 3-point range.

Oklahoma: The Sooners did a great job of sharing the basketball, finishing with 27 assists on 29 made baskets.

KEY MOMENT

Georgia cut the lead to two late in the second quarter, but Beers scored inside to ignite a 7-0 run, and the game was never close again.

KEY STAT

Oklahoma dominated inside and had 10 blocks.

UP NEXT

The Sooners take on Kentucky on Friday at 1:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.

POSTGAME NOTES

• No. 10 Oklahoma won its eighth straight game and advanced to the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament by defeating 12th-seeded Georgia, 70-52, at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, S.C., on Thursday.

• The fifth-seeded Sooners will take on No. 12 and fourth-seeded Kentucky in Friday's quarterfinal at 1:30 p.m. CT on ESPN. Kentucky knocked off OU in Norman on Feb. 2, 95-86, in what was Oklahoma's most last loss.

• Head coach Jennie Baranczyk improved to 4-0 in her first games at conference tournaments while at Oklahoma. The Sooners are now 7-6 in postseason games under the fourth-year head coach.

• All-SEC first-team selection Raegan Beers was dominant against the Lady Bulldogs, finishing with 22 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Beers has scored 20+ in four of her last five games, two of which saw the center score 30 points.

• Oklahoma reserves Liz Scott and Zya Vann scored 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Scott added eight rebounds, matching Beers for a team high.

• The Sooners tallied a Baranczyk-era-high 10 blocks, tying its output vs. DePaul earlier this season. In addition to Beers' three blocks, Payton Verhulst had two along with seven assists and five rebounds, while five other Sooners notched one block. OU held Georgia to 52 points, the lowest point total for an OU conference foe this season. The Sooners scored 70 points for the 28th time this season, which is tied for the most in the nation.

• Oklahoma's 18-point win was its 20th double-digit win of the season and ninth against SEC teams.

• A win vs. Kentucky on Friday would mark OU's seventh Quad 1 win and fifth top-25 win of the season. It would send the Sooners into the SEC semifinals to face either top-seeded South Carolina or eighth-seeded Vanderbilt who defeated ninth-seeded Tennessee on Thursday.
