Final Home Volleyball Matches Set for Wednesday, Friday

November 04, 2025 | Volleyball

NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team will close out its home slate with a pair of matches Nov. 5 and Nov. 7. The Sooners will host Mississippi State on Wednesday, followed by the home finale against Alabama on Friday. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. starts on SEC Network+.

THANK YOU, SENIORS
The 2025 senior class will be recognized Friday evening. The five-member class consists of four-year letterwinners Alexis Shelton and Sydney Thompson and transfers Kelli Jo Burgess, Emoni Bush and Kenadie Patterson. Burgess joined the Sooners in 2024, while Bush and Patterson joined the team for the 2025 season.

Shelton has undeniably left her mark on the program. The senior ranks sixth all-time in program history with 1,440 kills and holds the No. 2 spot for kills in a single season (455, 2024) and the No. 7 spot (400, 2023). Shelton was the 17th OU volleyball All-American and one of just six athletes to earn first, second or third team recognition in program history.

Thompson has been a staple for OU volleyball in her four seasons. She has tallied 67 service aces and 237 digs across 87 career matches played. She has served as a libero in her senior season after spending three years as a defensive specialist.
Burgess has provided needed depth at middle blocker for the last two seasons. The Utah transfer has had an incredible second season for the Sooners and is on pace to set multiple OU records in her final year. Along with boasting a top five hitting percentage this season, she has been a force on defense with 190 blocks the last two seasons.

Bush and Patterson added veteran experience to the 2025 squad. As one of the primary attackers, Bush has recorded 263 kills in her lone season, while also adding depth to the defense with 132 digs and 65 blocks. Patterson has recorded 55 blocks to go with 50 kills in her 64 sets played as a Sooner.

LOOK BACK AT IT
The Sooners snapped a five-game losing streak on Wednesday, Oct. 29, as they took down Arkansas in a four-set victory. Four players reached double-digit kills, and the squad tallied 11.5 blocks in the win. Alexis Shelton led the team with 22 kills on a .378 clip, while adding nine digs, three blocks and the game-winning ace. Emoni Bush notched her second double-double of the season with 18 kills and 10 digs, to go with three blocks. Kamille Gibson and Kelli Jo Burgess tallied 10 kills, while helping to power the defense. Burgess tied her career high with nine blocks, while Gibson set her career high with six.

SEC CHAMPIONSHIP SOON
The SEC will relaunch the SEC Volleyball Championship this season, slated to take place November 21-25, 2025 at Enmarket Arena. Wednesday's match will be a major factor in seeding for the tournament as the Sooners are currently tied with Mississippi State at 5-6 in league play and the winner will hold the two-team tiebreaker. As the nine seed, OU would open play on Nov. 21 against Arkansas. Teams seeded 1-4 receive a double-bye, while teams 5-8 receive a first-round bye.

WELCOME TO THE BLOCK PARTY
The Sooners defense has been a force to be reckoned with this season, especially in league action. In conference games only, the Sooners are No. 1 in blocks/set with 2.83. OU is narrowly in second in total blocks with 124.5 to Missouri's 125. Kelli Jo Burgess is second in league play with 1.57 blocks/set but leads the conference as the only player with double-digit solo blocks (12), while sitting second with 69 total blocks. The Sooners have recorded at least 6.0 blocks in every match this season, with a season high of 16.5 against South Carolina. In nine matches, OU has put up double-digit blocks with six of those coming against conference opponents. OU's 13.5 blocks against Texas were the second-most allowed blocks by the Longhorns.

MILESTONE WATCH
Senior Emoni Bush is closing in on a career milestone as she needs just 12 kills to reach 1,000 in her career. Bush, who spent her first three seasons at Washington, currently has 988 kills, 263 of which have come as a Sooner. Alexis Shelton is nearing the 1,500-kill mark as she has tallied 1,440 in her four years as a Sooner. The senior has tallied 322 kills this season and needs to average 12 kills per match in the final five matches of the season to achieve the feat. Shelton is averaging just over 15 per match, to date.

STATS & RANKINGS
Kelli Jo Burgess represents the Sooners nationally, sitting in ninth in hitting percentage at .429. Burgess is the second-highest ranked Power 4 athlete and sits atop the SEC rankings. In the SEC, she is also fourth in blocks with 1.32 per set. Emoni Bush is ranked in the SEC, sitting at No. 9 with 0.33 aces per set. In conference matches only, Burgess is fourth in hitting percentage (.395) and second in blocks/set (1.57), while Alexis Shelton is eighth in kills/set (4.32) and seventh in points/set (4.88). As a team, the Sooners are No. 3 in the SEC with 2.55 blocks/set and 1.57 aces/set in all games. In conference play, the Sooners are No. 1 in blocks (2.83/set) and No. 4 in aces (1.41).

SERIES HISTORY
MISSISSIPPI STATE: The Sooners lead the all-time series 3-2 after earning the win in Starkville last season in a four-set victory. Alexis Shelton had a double-double in last year's victory over the Bulldogs with 17 kills and 11 digs, while Kelli Jo Burgess totaled 8.0 blocks. This will be the fourth meeting between the teams in the last five years and State is 2-1 in that timespan.

ALABAMA: The two crimson squads of the SEC are tied all-time with three wins apiece. The Sooners have won the last three meetings, including last year's three-set victory in Norman. Of the six meetings, the losing team has only won a set once with the other five matchups being sweeps.

LOOKING AHEAD
The regular season concludes with one final road trip. The Sooners will travel to Kentucky on Friday, Nov. 14, before wrapping up SEC play on Sunday, Nov. 16 at Tennessee.
