Sooners Drop Red River Rivalry

DALLAS – Oklahoma fell 23-6 to Texas in the annual Red River Rivalry on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl.
The sixth-ranked Sooners (5-1) led 6-3 at halftime behind two Tate Sandell field goals, but Texas (4-2) controlled the second half to hand OU its first loss of the season. The Longhorns, ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP poll, limited Oklahoma to 88 yards after halftime.
Quarterback John Mateer made his first appearance since the Sept. 20 win over Auburn, completing 20 of 38 passes for 202 yards with three interceptions. Deion Burks and Isaiah Sategna III each surpassed 60 receiving yards, while freshman Tory Blaylock led the Sooners with 33 rushing yards.
Texas quarterback Arch Manning threw for 166 yards and one touchdown, connecting with DeAndre Moore Jr. in the third quarter to give the Longhorns the lead. The Sooners' defense held Texas to three field goals on the day, but a 75-yard punt return touchdown by Ryan Niblett in the fourth quarter sealed the outcome.
Kendall Daniels led OU with six tackles, including two for loss. Taylor Wein recorded three tackles for loss, and R Mason Thomas added the Sooners' lone sack.
Oklahoma travels to Columbia, S.C., next Saturday to face South Carolina. Kickoff will be at 11 or 11:45 a.m. CT on SEC Network or ABC.
