NORMAN – University of Oklahoma cross country freshman
Thobias Cheruiyot was named the Southeastern Conference Men's Freshman Runner of the Week following his performance at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Friday.
Cheruiyot was granted the honor after placing 18th in South Bend against three nationally ranked teams, No. 4 Northern Arizona, No. 9 Notre Dame and No. 30 Michigan State, plus 13 more regionally ranked teams. In the men's 8K, he clocked a personal-record time of 23:02.2. It was the second-fastest time by a freshman in the SEC last weekend behind Alabama's Dismus Lokira, who was named SEC Men's Runner of the Week.
Cheruiyot's first recognition came on Sept. 3 after he took first place in the 5K at the OSU Cowboy Preview. His career-best 14:57.2 time was the fastest recorded by a freshman in the SEC that weekend.
