COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina increased its record NCAA tournament winning streak to 20 games with a 5-0 win over Oklahoma Saturday.
The No. 12 Sooners (42-24) were the last team to beat the No. 2 Gamecocks (44-17) in the championship postseason, doing so in the 2010 College World Series, but were unable to overcome an early deficit to the two-time defending national champions in game one of the Columbia Super Regional.
The Gamecocks scored three runs in the second inning and kept the Sooners scoreless for Michael's Roth (7-1) third shutout appearance of the season in 17 starts.
South Carolina knocked OU starter Jordan John out the game after two innings. L.B. Dantzler hit an RBI double between the outfielders in right center before a wild pitch to Chase Vergason on the following at-bat scored Erik Payne. Vergason hit a sacrifice fly to center on the next pitch to score Dantzler.
The Sooners left six on base, including two in scoring position.
Dillon Overton replaced John (8-8) on the mound in the third inning and kept South Carolina hitless over the next three innings.
In the seventh, the Gamecocks scored two runs with two outs. Leadoff hitter Joey Pankake plated Vergason once more with a single to shallow center field and then scored from a hit by Christian Walker.
The Sooners and Gamecocks play game two of the best-of-three Super Regional series Sunday at 6 p.m. Central. The game will broadcast on ESPNU and Sportstalk KREF 1400 AM.
