AUSTIN, Texas -- Freshman Dillon Overton (7-3) picked up his second win over a top 10 team this week with 4 2/3 innings of relief in a 5-2 victory for No. 10 Oklahoma at No. 4 Texas on Sunday.
The relief effort by Overton and nine hits from the offense gave OU the win in the in the final game of the series after Texas claimed the first two, 5-0 and 4-3. The win also snapped a 10-game skid for the Sooners against the Longhorns.
“We leave here with some disappointment, we needed to get a series win this weekend to help position ourselves for the postseason,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway.
The Sooners still split a 2-2 record this week in four games against ranked opponents. The week started on Tuesday when Overton also came in relief of Bobby Shore with four innings in the win at No. 7 TCU. Sunday's win was Overton's third over a ranked opponent after also defeating then-No. 25 Oklahoma State earlier in the year in a midweek game.
“The left hander did a good job today,” added Golloway. “He's pitched well in some critical ball games.”
Oklahoma put two runs across in the top of the third, starting with Tyler Ogle's two-out double over the head of right fielder Mark Payton's head.
In the bottom of the fourth, Texas cut the Sooner lead in half with a solo homer to left off the bat of Tant Shepherd. The home run resulted in the final batter for Shore, who lasted 3 1/3 innings in the start. Shore also started on Tuesday at TCU, for the first time since April 2, and also lasted three innings with 54 pitches.
The Longhorns' starter, Sam Stafford (5-2), recorded one more out than Shore and exited after 3 2/3 innings. He took the loss after giving up two runs, one earned.
Erik Ross used his speed in the sixth inning off a shot hit to the gap in right-center field to give him his first career triple and two RBIs. The Sooners led 4-1 after their at-bat in the sixth but ran into trouble in the bottom half of the frame. OU reliever Dillon Overton worked himself into and out off a bases-loaded jam without allowing a run, culminating with a strikeout of Jonathan Walsh.
The Sooner offense extended the lead to 5-1 after Max White hit his third home run of the season.
“It (the homer) was the difference in the game,” said Golloway.
“I've been working hard to get back in the groove and find it again,” said White. “That pitch was one of the best ones I've seen all season.”
The Sooners travel to Arkansas Little Rock for the final midweek game of the season with the Trojans. Wednesday's game gets underway at 6 p.m. at Dickey Stephens Park, home of the Arkansas Travelers (AA affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim). OU returns to Big 12 play over the weekend and hosts Kansas in a three-game series (May 6-8).
