Derek Cody joined Oklahoma Athletics in the summer of 2023 and serves as the director of video content for women’s basketball.
In his role, Cody produces recruiting and internal content for the program while capturing and creating external and in-venue content in coordination with SoonerVision.
Before arriving at Oklahoma, Cody served as video production manager at Feed the Children from November 2021 to May 2023, where he helped tell the story of the organization’s global impact through visual storytelling.
From 2019 to 2021, Cody was the director of video production for Orlando City SC (MLS) and Orlando Pride (NWSL), overseeing content for social media, broadcast, web and in-venue platforms. He wrote and directed the Emmy Award-winning documentary series “Bleed Purple,” earning honors in 2020 for direction of a single episode and in 2021 for direction of a series.
Prior to his time in Orlando, Cody spent five years at Mississippi State as assistant director for video operations. He produced content across all sports, with primary responsibilities for football and women’s basketball. His work supported a women’s basketball program that captured back-to-back SEC championships (2018, 2019), reached three consecutive Elite Eights (2017–19), and advanced to the NCAA championship game in 2017 and 2018. Cody won regional Emmy Awards in 2018 (editing) and 2019 (photography) for his contributions.
Cody earned his bachelor’s degree in communication with an emphasis in broadcasting and journalism from Mississippi State in 2018.
An Ada, Oklahoma, native and 2000 Ada High School graduate, Cody also worked as a cinematographer for Seasons 1 and 2 of the Netflix series Last Chance U in 2015 and 2016. He was the director of digital media at East Mississippi Community College prior to that and spent several years in local television, including as sports director and anchor at WCBI-TV in Columbus, Mississippi, and as a news reporter at KXII-TV in Sherman, Texas.
