Men’s Tennis Concludes ITA All-American Championship Run in Round of 32

TULSA, Okla. -- The Oklahoma men's tennis team wrapped up its run at the ITA All-American Championships at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center, with junior Alejandro Melero, senior Asahi Harazaki and freshman Daniel Uta representing the Sooners across pre-qualifying, qualifying and main draw singles play.
Melero opened tournament week in pre-qualifying singles with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Florida's Chen Ye. The Mallorca, Spain, product's run ended in the next round, falling to No. 21-seed Mitchell Sheldon of Michigan State, 4-6, 4-6.
Uta competed in the qualifying round of 64, running into No. 17-seed Lucas Marionneau of Texas. The freshman dropped the first set, 1-6, before answering with a 7-5 set of his own to force a decider. Marionneau closed out the match in the third, 6-4. In the qualifying consolation round of 32, Uta fell 6-1, 6-2 to Kentucky's Johan Oscar Lien.
Harazaki turned in the deepest run of the week for the Sooners. In the qualifying round of 64, the senior rallied past two-seed Hoyoung Roh of Vanderbilt in a three-set battle, 6-2, 0-6, 7-6(6). He followed that with a straight-set win over No. 17-seed Julian Alonso of Georgia, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the main draw.
Harazaki kept the momentum going in the main draw round of 64, defeating UCLA's Rudy Quan, 6-4, 7-6(4). In the round of 32, he met No. 2-seed Keegan Rice of Virginia, who ended Harazaki's main-draw bid, 6-2, 6-1.
Moving to the consolation bracket, Harazaki fell in the round of 32 to South Carolina's Paul Barbier Gazeu, 7-6(4), 6-3, closing out the Sooners' time at the tournament.
In doubles, the No. 5 seed duo of Harazaki and Melero opened qualifying with a 7-6(1), 6-2 loss to Texas Tech's Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri.
UP NEXT
The Sooners continue on the road heading to the Fayetteville Futures. Competition begins on Monday, Sep. 28 and continues through Sunday, Oct. 4. Draws, schedules and further tournament information will be released at a later date.
